With Cathy Rice's Hall of Fame induction, is it time to recognize more women in NASCAR history?

Chris Rice is no stranger to making achievements in the world of NASCAR. With Championships on his belt and the title of Kaulig President, Rice has conquered the world of NASCAR, but little do fans know, the streak for marking wins in NASCAR runs in the family. This time, it was his mother Cathy Rice who came under the spotlight.

After being nominated for the Virginia Motorsports Hall of Fame, it was a proud Chris Rice taking to social media for a special message for his mother.

Mothers are the backbone of our family and yet they manage to be phenomenal at their respective work zones. Cathy Rice, mother of Chris Rice made everyone proud after an iconic achievement. She earned a nomination as one of the six dignitaries to make it to the Virginia Motorsports Hall of Fame. This particular niche is the most prestigious honor for personalities who are associated with the world of sports and have left their permanent mark. Cathy Rice has spent a monumental 34 years of her life for the operational efficiency at South Boston Speedway. In the 2000s, she was the second woman to become a general manager for a NASCAR-sanctioned speedway. 

Beaming with pride, Chris Rice took to social media and shared an ecstatic video congratulating his beloved mother on such a feat. He said, “Well congrats mom. The Virginia Motorsports Hall of Fame, how awesome is that? A career that is well deserved to enter into the Hall of Fame. Such a wonderful time to know that you are going to be in the Virginia Motorsports Hall of Fame. So Awesome, congratulations. Cannot get enough. Over your career, you made so many people happy and smile and that’s what it is all about. Congratulations and I love you and I can’t wait to celebrate with you. What a great honor “. The achievement has become more exceptional as Cathy is the only woman in history to be a recipient of this prestige.

Cathy Rice has always been known for the exceptional work she has done for the NASCAR world. She has various honors to her sleeve like being an active member to vote for the Hall of Fame for three years. NASCAR has also honored Rice on various occasions like the NASCAR Team Player Award on three separate occasions. It is only a small glimpse of over 34 years of serving at the South Boston Speedway. During this time, she worked in different positions such as scorer, promotor, and then general manager, a position she held for 21 years.

It is not only the world of Motorsports that has honored the brilliant Cathy Rice for her contribution. Being a native of Halifax County, she has also been a proponent for the Halifax County-South Boston Sports Hall of Fame in 2023. To add to the prestige, she was the sixth personality from the world of Motorsports to make it to this Hall of Fame. But if you think that is all she received, you might be mistaken!

The Halifax County Chamber of Commerce also presented Cathy Rice with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021. She is also known for the commitment and contribution that she has shown to the world of motorsports. One can trace her rendezvous with motorsports back in the day when she got married to Allen Rice. He was also a part of the motorsports world which drew Cathy to this field. 

Did you know that Cathy had a monumental role to play when it came to revamping the South Boston Speedway and making it so advanced? Her expertise and knowledge about tracks have led her towards so many achievements and she is currently a consultant with the South Boston Speedway. We surely wish Cathy Rice a hearty congratulations for such a big win!
