Hendrick Motorsports driver Chase Elliott has been one of the more successful drivers in road course racing. Often dubbed as the road course king, the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series champion’s, very first win came at Watkins Glen International—a road course track. However, despite his prowess on the track, something unusual happened last year. Things did not go according to plan for the fan-favorite.
There is no denying that Elliott missed out on winning even a single road course race last year. Just recently, during an interview with the Garage Guys, the boy from Dawsonville finally took the time to address the elephant in the room.

During the conversation, Elliott mentioned, “I feel like we had had a couple of pretty good shots at it. I mean, the one that stands out most recently was the roval. I mean, I felt like…” The host interjected and said, “a pierce in the soul.”
Elliott then continued, “Yeah, that one was a bummer, man. I thought we did everything. I thought we did everything right. To be honest. I mean, the strategy was really good. We were able to get the lead there was controlling the end of the race. And you know, had had those late cautions that always put you in a tough spot as to what to do.”
Elliott did have a shot last year at winning it at Watkins Glen and at Charlotte Roval last year. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, that chance soon slipped away from him in both races.

It was the final restart with 3 laps to go at the Roval that saw indiscriminate chaos evolve on track. Everyone was fighting for the lead or track positions. Cars spun out and got caught up in the wall as soon as the restart occurred. But the Hendrick Motorsports driver got in the lead only for a brief while and then everything came crashing down around him.

After going wheel to wheel with AJ Allmendinger, Elliott made contact and lost two positions. Right after that, Allmendinger went off into the grass. That is when Kevin Harvick took the opportunity and zoomed past both of them. But right after at the next turn, it appeared as if Elliott was bumped by Tyler Reddick. Soon after, Elliott lost the rear and spun around on the grass, plunging down the order and out of contention. Following the race, he even had a brief shoving incident with the cameraman at the Roval.

That was the end of Elliott’s hopes of winning at Roval and getting at least one road course win over the duration of the 2022 season. However, despite the setbacks, he was able to march onto the Championship 4. Which again ended in disaster. He ended up wrapping up the season in 4th place.
