Is Chris Buescher's defiance admirable, or is it hurting his chances in the NASCAR playoffs?

Chris Buescher, although having enough points to be in the playoffs, is in a risky position with the season. As of now, there are 6 Chevrolets in the playoffs as Buescher becomes the 5th Ford to have a spot in the playoffs, but that can change within the upcoming 4 races. To take Beuscher out of the playoffs, two drivers need to bag a win from the ones that are not in the playoffs to replace Chris. While the threat of losing his playoff spot looms over his head, the No. 17 Mustang driver for RFK Racing seems confident that he will make it through into the playoffs.

Currently, Buescher is in a safe spot, 17 points above the playoff cutoffs. With only Ross Chastain between him and getting eliminated, the next 4 races are going to be crucial for him in the season. Obviously, a win would make things much better for the team, but even scoring points consistently might just secure him a seat to compete to be number 1 in 2024. RFK Racing proved last year that they can clutch the moment and bring their driver into the playoffs, but this year might be a different story.

Recently, Chris Buescher made his way to Bob Pockrass’ podcast, where they spoke about the events from the season and touched on the driver’s position on the grid. Although at P15, he is safe to make it into the playoffs, however, things can soon turn south for the driver, who desperately needs a win. While on Pockrass’ podcast, Buescher was asked, “Close on the bubble, are you nervous? Are you frustrated? Are you concerned? What is your mindset?”

The cool-headed driver revealed his thoughts by explaining, “Yeah, I mean, not nervous about it. You know, it’s something that we’re going to pay a little bit more attention to as we run down into these final four here. But, you know, I’m pretty adamant about it—I don’t want to change the way we approach our races. I’ve just seen it too many times in our sport where you try and get put back on your heels, and you have to change up what you’re doing, and it can end up costing you.”

For now, Buescher is confident about the way the team is progressing, and following what they did last year seems like the best way to secure a spot, according to him. Considering that there are only 4 races before the playoffs, Buescher said, “We’ve got, obviously, three of the next four races that we’re heading into where we were able to win last year, so that’s obviously a pretty awesome statistic as we look at it.” However, the driver knows that results from last year won’t work again, and he explained, “We’ve been very close to locking ourselves in, but we’ve been very good. Indy was a tough one.”

Reflecting on the Brickyard 400, the RF driver explained, “We ended up losing a little bit throughout the day and had a chance to recapture a lot of what we lost there on the final lap, and it got dinged again, so it was just a brutal weekend. Really, not much good came out of the race itself, but, you know, we definitely showed a lot of potential for speed.” While everything is looking good for Buescher, he knows better than to leave it up to fate to help him get into the playoffs.

Last year, the team was enjoying a phenomenal run, with Chris Buescher finishing 7th. Although there are no championships for him yet, he knows what the team needs to achieve to fight for the top spots in NASCAR. He spoke about last year’s performance, but that does not mean that history will repeat itself. In fact, with the way he has been driving this season, there is a good chance that he will make it into the top 5, considering everything.

As we approach the last 4 races before the playoffs, Buescher acknowledges the lack of points for the team as he stated, “It was just that we didn’t pull it all together and put many points on the table. So yeah, we have to be aware, but it’s not something we’re up in arms about or worried about.” He ends by mentioning that the team needs to “clean up a few things” and hopes that the situation goes their way. In the off chance that there are two new race winners this season, Buescher will be out of the playoffs, so the best thing for the team, to do here on forth is to aim for a race win to secure his spot.
