Are Tony Stewart's drivers just not cut out for the playoffs this year? What's your take?

The tension is boiling as the playoffs are just around the corner, NASCAR fans! Every team will deliver their best strategy to gather enough points to make the cutoff, especially ones who have still not made the list but could potentially turn the game around in these next five races. Three names stood out the most – Ross Chastain, Chase Briscoe, and Bubba Wallace as the next drivers to take up the last spot on the playoffs list.

However, in a scathing assessment of performance and points, a NASCAR insider has cast serious doubt on Chase Briscoe’s ability to overcome the massive points deficit and grab a playoff spot in the remaining races of the 2024 season. Sharing an overview of what it would take the Stewart-Haas Racing driver to make up for lost time, the outcomes are not looking positive in Briscoe’s favor.

Yes! It Is Great for NASCAR

No, It Was a Disaster This Time

The Stewart-Haas Racing driver Chase Briscoe is currently seeing his playoff hopes hanging by a thread. Currently sitting 16th in the standings, he finds himself a staggering 248 points behind the cutoff position with just 5 races left. Uh oh, that’s not good!

Delving deeper, the NASCAR insider explores the points and puts out the sheer mathematical improbability of Briscoe making up this ground. Drivers can earn maximum points of up to 60 in a single race, while the most they can gain on a rival is 59. Doing the math, the insider argues that it’s simply not feasible for Briscoe, who is outside the top 15, to make up more than just one race’s worth of points in such a short timeframe.

“The maximum you can gain over someone is 59,” he says discussing the driver’s points situation.

“And I know mathematically it’s not a race and a half but realistically you’re going to tell me that someone who is outside the top 16 is going to make up a race and a half worth of points on someone in five races? I don’t think that’s possible.”

To put that in perspective, for Chase Briscoe, that’s like being over a full race behind the driver in the last playoff spot. It’s a massive setback and would be extremely difficult to make up in such a short amount of time. Briscoe would need an incredible run over the next 5 races to catch up. But if his performance this season is anything to judge by, that may not be an easy feat!

Have an interesting take?

With 0 wins, just 2 top-5 finishes, and 6 top-10s in 17 races, the 29-year-old has failed consistently to challenge the frontrunners. In addition, his recent DNF at Sonoma has further dented his playoff aspirations by a mile!

After being recruited to Joe Gibbs Racing for the next season of the NASCAR Cup Series, there is still hope for his career in NASCAR entirely. This precarious position could undoubtedly impact Briscoe’s performances, as he prepares to join his new team while battling to keep his playoff hopes alive. While his rivals are regularly finishing up front and racking up stage wins and playoff points, Briscoe has been mired in the middle of the pack more often, than not.

In conclusion, the NASCAR insider’s assessment paints a bleak picture for Chase Briscoe’s playoff aspirations, with the driver facing a roadblock in his performance that appears increasingly impossible as the season winds down. Will he overcome his obstacle or is the analyst right? Does Briscoe stand no chance at the playoffs this time around?
