NASCAR’s implementation of the playoffs has always been subjected to mixed responses. However, its position to have only a single race in the championship four stages has faced criticism from many quarters. Previously, NASCAR driver and team owner Denny Hamlin had suggested increasing the championship from four races to three. Even former NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr recommended something along similar lines. Recently, Bubba Wallace’s spotter and NASCAR insider stated his stance on Hamlin’s suggestion.

Freddie Kraft shared his views on the Door Bumper Clear podcast. He said, I agree with them. I don’t like the single-race format. I’ve said on here before. It’s just too many variables to decide your champion. You get a late race caution, you get a bad pit stop… I don’t think that should determine your entire season.”

Many have deemed the single-race format to be unfair to the championship contenders. Kraft argues that there can be several factors that could determine the outcome of the race. Not all of them necessarily could be blamed on the driver. There can be cases of bad pit stops or several other factors. In the end, if that changes the championship outcome, it would not indicate as fair.

Freddie Kraft shares his suggestion

Freddie Kraft is the spotter for Bubba Wallace in the 23XI Racing team. During the same podcast, he suggested what actions he would have taken to improve the championship round. Most of his points made sense and NASCAR should take them under consideration.

Kraft mentioned, “The first thing I would do first, I would start right off the bat and cut the field in half. Maybe not in half, but cut the field down. Like I don’t think half of our field shouldn’t make the playoffs. You know, we got 16 guys going in there. I don’t know that there’s 32 competitive cars every week. So that’d be one thing I do. I’d cut it right back to ten or twelve, right off the bat. Just make it harder to get in.”

Moreover, Kraft’s suggestions do make sense and fall in line with that of Denny Hamlin and Dale Earnhardt Jr. This input from drivers and others involved in the sport is definitely food for thought for NASCAR. Another point that Kraft said was making the playoff much harder to get into. That would make sense, also towards increasing the sense of competition during the regular season. Thus building interest among the fan base.
