NASCAR driver and part-owner of 23XI Racing, Denny Hamlin is known for keeping true to his convictions. He is certainly not one to take the back seat and not speak his mind. Recently, speaking candidly about a particular aspect of the NASCAR organization, he found himself at loggerheads with NASCAR fans.

The topic of contention was the Charter system—first announced by NASCAR in 2016.

Last year, a lot of teams had come out and expressed their displeasure with what NASCAR had to offer. Hamlin, in the second episode of “Actions Detrimental with Danny Hamlin” podcast, shed some light on the Charter system and why it makes complete sense to have permanent Charters.

Denny Hamlin doesn’t want to lose the brand value

Talking to co-host Jared Allen, he said that he was very aware of the hatred going on around the Charter system. He added, “People, the Charters have to be, they have to be permanent, absolutely have to be permanent.

“Why would anyone spend any money on a franchise knowing that franchise can be taken away? There is no value in a franchise if it could just be … at any moment that they say ‘No, sorry, we don’t want to renew the Charter deal.’ That makes our franchise values worth ******* nothing.”

He also pointed out the drawback that it restricts teams from expanding. At the same time, if teams want to field a new car, it will cost them more money to buy a Charter—which, Hamlin finds to be a good thing. He furthered his stance by emphasizing, “We want it to cost money to enter the sport. We do because that builds our franchise value.”

Well, the business and brand value part of it does make sense as a team owner. Whereas fans’ contention seems fair too as they want more drivers and teams to get their chance at the highest tier. As for NASCAR’s decision, we’ll have to wait and see how many modifications are made to the Charter system.
