Ryan Blaney has become quite the trendsetter! After the Team Penske driver’s hair-length victory at the Talladega Superspeedway, the moment wasn’t expected to be recaptured in the very next playoff race. This time in the Xfinity Series, but with a slight twist in the tale.

In the Drive For The Cure 250, JR Motorsports‘ #1 driver seamlessly won the checkered flag. And yet a far more interesting battle took place behind him. Three drivers simultaneously raced past the finish line and only one paid a heavy price for it.

Daniel Hemric started the playoff season on a high note with a runner-up finish at the Bristol Motor Speedway. After an unfortunate crash in Texas, Kauling Racing‘s Hemric required a faultless performance in the last race of the Round of 12. However, two runner-up stage positions and a dramatic tussle for the 5th place were still not enough to push him over to the next round.

With his 8th-place finish, Hemric failed to score the necessary points and was dealt the crushing blow of elimination. The #10 driver knew he had given it his all and was forced to reconcile with the disappointing reality. Speaking to Frontstretch in the post-race interview, Hemric explained it would have been distracting for him to know all the chaotic details of the race so he just focused on himself.

“I told them just give me the gist of what was happening. I just needed to know who was where. I don’t ever care to know about it until it actually matters. That way you can manage a bigger percentage of risk…There was obviously the one leading in the end. I kinda knew what I needed to do and I feel like the car was pretty capable of doing it. But when everybody comes out the road, it’s a matter of which lane to choose, how you get through traffic, and how you fire off.

“Thought we did almost everything right. Just that one car in the group did a little bit better. Like I said, what we did today was something I’m proud of,” Hemric said.

Team owner Matt Kaulig must be equally proud of his upcoming racer. But how did Hemric lose his position? Turns out, he has Ryan Blaney to blame for that.

When Ryan Blaney inched past the later-disqualified Kevin Harvick in the playoff race last weekend, he couldn’t have imagined the younger drivers would soon attempt to recreate it. Whereas Blaney won by a nerve-wracking 0.012 seconds, Hemric was just as much in dire need of that maneuver to avoid elimination in Charlotte. Unfortunately for him, Parker Kligerman and Kaz Grala were also influenced by the top-tier race in Talladega.

On the last lap of the race, the #10 Chevrolet ran three wide with the #48 and the #26 Toyota, all eying a 5th-place finish. In the unbelievable outcome, Grala turned out to be 0.038 seconds ahead of Hemric and an astonishing 0.001 seconds ahead of Kligerman. Out of three, only Hemric was still in contention for a playoff position and those precious seconds lost him the coveted spot.
