Despite having his worst season in the Cup Series in 2023, Chase Elliott was recently voted as NASCAR’s most popular driver. While the award does not necessarily depend on how a driver has performed throughout the season, it is something that a lot of drivers would like to win. One driver who is a part of Stewart-Haas Racing believes that he is already there as he shares the same first name as Elliott.

To say that Chase Elliott did not live up to expectations in the 2023 Cup Series season would be an understatement. The Hendrick Motorsports driver got injured at the beginning of the season and could not take part in 6 races and was suspended for another. The former champion did not make the playoffs and he will be looking to bounce back.

The driver who shares the same name as the Hendrick Motorsports star is none other than Chase Briscoe. The Stewart-Haas Racing man had a dull season as well. The team was in disarray almost throughout the season as they failed to win a single race in the Cup Series. The driver of the No. 14 finished in the top 5 on 4 occasions with a season-high finish of P4 in Talladega.

His miseries were compounded by NASCAR after the Coca-Cola 600. Following a post-race inspection that turned up evidence of a fake engine panel NACA duct, NASCAR levied an L3 penalty on the No. 14. This resulted in the team losing 25 playoff points and 125 owner and driver points, as well as a six-race suspension and $250,000 fine for crew chief Johnny Klausmeier.

However, he did manage to retain the sponsorship of Mahindra Tractors during a time when the team lost a lot of other sponsors. “Chase is an amazing guy … so it made sense to keep working with the team. I know they had a tough year, but I’m confident they’ll hopefully look better next year,” representatives of the company said as per a report.

Now that the season’s miseries are over, the 28-year-old decided to have some fun with fans on Reddit, bringing Chase Elliott into the picture for a little laugh.

A question was posted on Reddit with a condition. “I need a fav NASCAR driver. If Chase Briscoe comments I’ll pick him.” The Cup Series driver couldn’t resist and commented, sending everyone into a frenzy. Fortunately, the SHR man was kind enough to reply to a lot of the comments.

“Atta boy,” the Cup Series driver wrote to which a fan noted his attempts to gain new fans. “Wasting no time in this offseason to gain fans I see,” they wrote.

Another fan asked if the SHR driver was gunning for the Most Popular Driver award for 2024, to which he answered that he had the same first name as the 2023 winner, Chase Elliott. “I already got the first name,” he wrote.

“My brother and I were Tony fans.. We recently are getting back into things, sell us on getting back behind the 14,” wrote another user. Briscoe was smart about going about this as he delivered a witty reply, “You just gotta put duct tape over the name of all your apparel.”

Another fan asked the SHR man about the experience of being a race car driver at the highest level to which he replied, “Has its pros and cons,”
