Home/NASCAR

During the late 1930s and early to mid-1940s, ‘runners’ would race ‘souped up’ or performance-enhanced cars. They would race for recreation in and around North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and other states in the south. Soon, promoters got involved and the drivers now had money to race. On December 15, 1947, Bill France, a Washington DC native who lived in sunny Daytona, Florida, gathered a group and they planted the seed to what would become, the National Association of Stock Car Racing or, simply, NASCAR.

Although NASCAR would come into existence in February 1948, the early rules and regulations were established in the 1947 meeting. The meeting took place at “The Penthouse Club” of the Streamline Hotel near Daytona Beach.

The official website of Streamline Hotel says, “If our peppercorn-colored walls could talk, their most famous account would be in 1947 when Bill France Sr., numerous race car drivers, officials and promoters gathered at our rooftop bar to discuss rules, payments and various issues affecting the sport of stock car racing. After libations and deliberations, the meeting adjourned with a signed formation of what is now known as NASCAR, and the Birthplace of Stock Car Racing was forever cemented into our foundation.”
