Lady luck wasn’t on Dale Earnhardt Jr’s side at Bristol Motor Speedway. From radio issues to multiple trips to pit road, a speeding penalty, and losing his glasses, it was as eventful a race as the 49-year-old could have asked for in his only Xfinity Series appearance of the season. However, despite the many setbacks he was forced to overcome, Junior was all smiles after crossing the checkered flag, finishing an impressive seventh place at the 2024 Food City 300.

However, his race didn’t start on as cheerful a note as how it ended. The two-time Xfinity Series winner was heard venting his frustrations to the team because of radio issues, much to the delight of NASCAR fans, who enjoyed the drama that came at Dale Jr.’s expense.

It wasn’t the start that Dale Earnhardt Jr wanted. Driving the No. 88 Chevy for JR Motorsports, the veteran started the race in 13th place, hoping to get off to a flying start at the 0.533-mile oval. However, things soon took a turn for the worse as radio issues made it difficult for Junior to talk to crew chief Andrew Overstreet and spotter T.J. Majors. He was forced to go into the pits to resolve the problem during the first caution period, only to be penalized for speeding and relegated to the back of the grid. To make matters worse, Junior continued to face radio issues, which frustrated him to no end.

Dale Jr was heard venting out on the team radio, saying, “How long will this f***ing last? I’m coming to the f***ing pit lane.” With almost 50 laps going by without the communication issues being resolved, Junior’s frustration peaked, prompting him to say. “Over there, fix the f***ing radio!”. The team tried a variety of solutions to fix the communication, including swapping his helmet and giving him new wiring harnesses, which finally seemed to do the trick after four attempts. He also received a fresh pair of glasses, which finally helped him focus on the race without external distractions.

Junior finished 20th by the end of the first stage, but by pitting during caution, he managed to stay on track when the second stage began on Lap 95, propelling him into the top 10. From that point on, there was no looking back as Dale Earnhardt Jr. dialed back the clock in his No. 88 Hellmann’s Chevrolet Camaro, going as high as fourth. With 121 laps remaining at the start of the final stage, Junior’s radio issues resurfaced, but he soldiered on at ‘The Last Great Colosseum.’ With just 20 laps to go, Dale Jr. was overtaken by his teammate Brandon Jones, forcing the 49-year-old to settle for a seventh-place result.

While he could have finished higher, a top-ten finish on the short track was a good result, given the circumstances Junior had to deal with early on in the race. The result was also a significant improvement from his 30th-place finish last year, especially since he managed to secure two stage points. With Dale Jr. claiming that he will take a break from racing in 2025, the result is something he can make peace with until he gets behind the wheel again in the Xfinity Series. However, the race won’t be remembered for Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s dramatic comeback from the back of the grid, but for the on-track drama that he was forced to overcome at the beginning of the 2024 Food City 300.
