After Chase Elliott fractured his leg in a snowboarding accident, debates surrounding his eligibility to qualify for the playoffs began doing rounds. Since Elliott’s injury does not allow him to undergo weight-bearing activities, he would be missing races for an unspecified time. While some believe that NASCAR should grant the Hendrick Motorsports driver a waiver on medical grounds, others feel that since the injury isn’t NASCAR-related, granting a waiver wouldn’t be fair. But Dale Earnhardt Jr feels that there is more to the entire incident than just the debate for a waiver.
In the recent episode of Dale Jr Download, Earnhardt Jr revealed that, as per him, the risks a driver takes outside of his/her role are their choice as well as responsibility. However, he added that the drivers should be made aware of the repercussions their actions hold.
He said, “Hopefully, somebody in your camp’s going ‘Look man, I know you want to do this. Here’s what you’re getting paid by the Cup team. Here is the insurance coverage that we have that would handle any kind of injury, or worse. And so, if there’s an injury that limits you for a couple weeks, this is the repercussions’.”

“‘If there’s an injury that knocks you out of driving a race car entirely, here is the repercussions’.”
Earnhardt Jr admitted that ultimately, it is the driver’s decision to do what they want to do. However, he added, “So, hopefully, there’s somebody that’s letting this driver know, ‘These are all the things that get triggered when certain things, certain dominoes fall.’ And as long as you have that information, and understand all of those repercussions, go do whatever you want to do.”
What is the team’s game plan in Chase Elliott’s absence?
Hendrick Motorsports has announced that Chase Elliott’s injury recovery time is currently set at six weeks. This means that the 2020 Cup Series champion would be missing a significant number of races this season, making it imperative for the team to chalk out a replacement plan for #9.
For this, Hendrick Motorsports announced that Josh Berry, who filled in for Elliott at Las Vegas, will continue to drive the #9 car on all ovals. They also shared that Jordan Taylor would be filling in for Elliott at the COTA race.
