I’ve never been more nervous for anything… I’m cancelling.” She quickly got over her nerves and got into the NASCAR spirit. “I’m so obsessed with NASCAR fans. Yes. They know me. They’re the purest people. I’m never leaving. This is the best day of my life,” she gushed. She was visibly moved by the excitement of seeing the cars up close. “We just got to look at the cars. No way. I have chills. It’s Michael Phelps,” she added, excited to be joined by the world’s most decorated Olympian.

In recent years, NASCAR has leaned into the tradition of inviting high-profile celebrities to play key roles at its biggest events. Races have drawn celebrities such as Tom Cruise, Adam Sandler, and Channing Tatum, who admire the sport’s thrilling atmosphere. Various influential figures have waved the green flag at the Daytona 500, including former President Donald Trump, who took a lap in the presidential limousine, ‘The Beast.’
There was considerable attention this year when NASCAR named Whitney Cummings the Honorary Starter. A renowned comedian, actress, writer, and producer, Cummings instantly connected with fans on social media with her signature humor and wit. The news was shared by Fox Sports’ Bob Pockrass, and Cummings’ candid responses made an instant impression, showing her excitement to be part of such an important event. President of Phoenix Raceway Latasha Causey praised the decision to involve Cummings, stating, “We’re elated to have Whitney Cummings join us for the NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race. Her lively personality will surely help excite our sold-out crowd before we crown our 2024 champion.” A mix of motorsport and pop culture creates a unique atmosphere on race day that appeals to a wide range of spectators.
Even though Cummings’ involvement was generally well-received, not everyone was happy with it. Social media commentators questioned her involvement, one saying, “If Austin Dillon can drive a Cup car, she can wave the Green Flag.” Another joked, “She must need cash,” and others speculated about behind-the-scenes reasons, suggesting, “Probably a favor to one of the networks to promote a new show.” Despite the lighthearted commentary, Cummings’ appearance showed NASCAR’s efforts to keep reaching out to new audiences.
