NASCAR is a sport defined by fierce on-track battles, heated emotions, and complex dynamics between drivers. The recent race at Pocono Raceway showcased one such intense battle. It was the incident between Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin and Hendrick Motorsports‘s Kyle Larson that attracted everyone’s attention. Hamlin emerged victorious, leaving Larson frustrated.
The battle between Hamlin and Larson intensified as the checkered flag neared. With just seven laps to go, Larson led the field, with Hamlin in close pursuit. However, in a decisive move, Hamlin forced Larson wide into the barriers, causing Larson’s car to brush against them and lose momentum. The incident dropped Larson down to a disappointing 20th position, robbing him of either a potential race win or a top-2 finish.
In a recent revelation, Hendrick Motorsports Vice President of Competition, Chad Knaus, appeared to withhold sympathy from his star driver, Larson, raising eyebrows among NASCAR fans.

Hendrick Motorsports VP believed that Kyle Larson was rightfully upset after Pocono
Chad Knaus was invited as a guest analyst on the recent episode of NASCAR Race Hub. When asked about his thoughts on the incident, Knaus did not mince words. He indicated that Larson had every right to be upset about the incident. While acknowledging the friendship between Larson and Hamlin off the track, Knaus emphasized that on-track competition for trophies could test even the closest relationships.
“You know friendship gets strong when it comes to Trophies right?” said Knaus. “You know people are going to do what they need to do to try to get trophies. Look, I know they’re close friends. I don’t know if they’ve spoken. I don’t know if they haven’t spoken. I know that Kyle is upset about it as in I think from our perspective rightfully so.”
“And Denny’s like, ‘Well, he would have done the same thing to me.’ So, everybody’s got a different perspective on this one and we’re just gonna see what happens going forward. Because one thing I do know is that how you race other people is how you ultimately end up getting raced and I think that’s what got Kyle most upset,” he concluded.
Knaus’s response indicated that he is as he should be, focused on the competitive aspect of the sport, where friendships could be put aside temporarily in pursuit of victory.
In the aftermath of the race, Larson expressed his frustration. He believed that Hamlin didn’t leave enough space during the critical moment. While Hamlin countered that there was no contact between their cars, video footage from Kevin Harvick’s car seemed to indicate otherwise. The incident left spectators disappointed, and Larson’s post-race bump into Hamlin’s car under caution further underscored the intensity of the moment.

Kyle Larson expressed his disappointment with the lack of respect shown by his friend. In his post-race interviews, Larson candidly shared his thoughts on the incident and his expectations as a competitor and a friend. Despite his frustration, Larson remained determined not to let the incident tarnish their friendship on the track.
“Yeah, we’re friends. Yes, this makes things shitty and awkward,” said Larson after the race. “Whatever. He’s always right. All the buddies know Denny is always right. I’m sure he was in the right there as well. It is what it is. I’m not going to let it tarnish a friendship on the track, but I am pissed. And I feel like I should be pissed.”
“I’m an aggressive racer, I get it, but I tend to race my friends with more respect,” he continued. “I just feel like I haven’t got that respect from him, especially this year.”
