Poll of the day

Kyle Larson & HMS Are Planning to Return to Indy 500 Next Year. But Should They?

Yes! It Is Great for NASCAR

No, It Was a Disaster This Time

The Toyota/Save Mart 350 was a test of endurance and strategic precision. Early on, several competitors faced debilitating setbacks. Denny Hamlin’s engine failure on lap three marked an early exit, drastically affecting his standings. Richard Childress Racing’s Will Brown encountered an ECU fault in his Chevrolet, forcing him out prematurely. Meanwhile, Martin Truex Jr ran out of fuel during the final lap.

All these events underscore the race’s demanding nature and the critical role of pit strategy. This is where HMS’s aggressive strategy pioneered by its ace crew chief, Cliff Daniel, comes into the picture.

Amidst this chaos, the HMS team led by Cliff Daniel, demonstrated unparalleled strategic acumen. The plan hinged on optimal tire management and precise pit stops. Daniels’ decision to pit Larson later put the  #5 Chevrolet in a prime position to capitalize on fresher tires. This move proved decisive, as Larson surged from eighth place to first in the final 20 laps, eventually securing the lead with nine laps remaining.

The recent conversation between NASCAR insiders Jeff Gluck and Jordan Bianchi on “The Teardown” podcast shed light on the brilliance behind Daniels’ tactics. Gluck noted, “It was an interesting scenario today because you had a situation where Kyle Larson’s crew chief met with Daniels. He said they had never, you know, talking about the three-way strategy you never would have planned that eight crosswinds in the first two stages.”

“As he said, that’s unprecedented. So they did not talk about that as being one of the scenarios. He said they were coming up with a strategy on the fly. But at the same time, it was very logical for them.” This flexibility allowed Larson to stay on the offensive, a crucial factor in their victory.

Bianchi emphasized, “Kevin Harvick says all the time when it comes down to it, he wants to be on offense. You know, late race situations he says give me four tires. I just want to go attack. I don’t have to worry about anything else. I just want to go attack. I think Larson is that kind of driver. Larson is at his best when he is in attack mode and can just focus forward and just go after it.” This strategy of putting Larson in attack mode paid off. Kyle Larson leveraged his natural driving prowess to outpace his rivals on the freshly paved Sonoma track.

Daniels’ impressive track record with HMS speaks volumes. He consistently puts his driver in a position to excel. As highlighted by Bianchi: “And I think that is the genesis of what makes this team so good is Cliff Daniels is an excellent crew chief. And one of the things he does so so well is he puts his driver in situations for him to excel and to best showcase his skill set.” This latest win at Sonoma is a testament to their synergy, where strategic insight meets driving excellence.

In the post-race press conference, Daniels provided insights into the race strategy that led to Larson’s victory. He acknowledged the unpredictability of the numerous cautions and how it necessitated a shift in their game plan. “I wasn’t beyond confident that it was going to work, but we had to commit to the long side of things to have the offensive tires for the end of the race,” Daniels explained. His calm and collected approach, even under duress, was pivotal in executing the winning strategy.

Daniels elaborated on the importance of tire management and how it played a critical role in their success. The fresh tires allowed Larson to push harder. As a result, helps maintain a high pace throughout the final laps. “I knew that with new tires and a lot of grip in them, Kyle was going to be really fast, luckily the disparity of the laps on tires is what helped us get up to them

Moreover, Daniels’ focus on learning from both successes and setbacks has been instrumental in refining his approach. “You learn the healthy things that you need to learn from both sides of the coin, from the wins and when it doesn’t go your way,” he remarked. This philosophy has fortified HMS’s race strategies, making them one of the most formidable teams in NASCAR today.
