Home/NASCAR

Over the past few weeks, there has been an increase in violent altercations at venues. Fans were already rocked by the Truck Series fight between Nick Sanchez and Matt Crafton when a huge brawl erupted at Martinsville in one of the lower divisions of NASCAR. Now, there is yet another violent altercation to talk about. Things took a turn for the worse this time, as one of the parties involved ended up in the hospital.

At the recently concluded Thompson Outlaw Modified event, 21-year-old Sam Rameau crossed all boundaries. An on-track incident with George Bessette Jr. saw both drivers crash out of the Thompson Outlaw Modified 100-lap feature race on lap 85. The two drivers were battling for the lead. As the race restarted, chaos ensued off-track, leading to physical assault. A video emerged on social media of Sam Rameau and his team members encountering George Bessette Jr.

George Bessette Jr. had just stopped his car after the crash near the pit road, and before Bessette Jr. could get out, he was seen forcibly dragged out of his car by Rameau’s team members. The video showed a member of Rameau’s team striking someone with a helmet, sending them to their knees. NASCAR is a sport whose popularity is not exactly on the upward curve.

The incident was absolutely brutal and will leave a bad taste in fans’ mouths. This is the third major incident that has taken place in a NASCAR-sanctioned race in the space of a few weeks. The aftermath of the whole altercation was brutal.

George Bessette Jr. had to be taken to the hospital for the injuries he suffered. A track official was also hospitalized by a member of the Rameau team. As a result, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour entry for the No. 06 driver of the Rameau Family Motorsports team is indefinitely suspended. The team has also been banned from all ACT and PASS-sanctioned tracks and events.

Things got so bad that a police investigation was launched into the matter. However, the Connecticut State Police have confirmed that there were no arrests made related to the fight at the Thompson Speedway. Rameau Family Motorsports was found in breach of Rule 12-8, stating that NASCAR membership entails privileges, responsibilities, and obligations.

It emphasizes how important proper behavior is, both on and off the track. Rameau’s behavior, in particular member-to-member altercations, including physical aggression and other aggressive expressions, caused the suspension. As NASCAR passed the judgment, fans were in unison as they supported the decision. Violence might have been a part of NASCAR for a long time, but in today’s day and age, it is something that, quite simply, should not happen.

Fans on Reddit expressed their opinion on the matter. Most people believed that NASCAR made the correct decision. They also believed that Sam Rameau’s racing career would take a significant hit because of his actions.

“I think his racing career is over… except for Bowman Gray (I think),” one fan wrote.

“well I guess his modified career is over,” penned another.

Angry NASCAR fans condemned the assault. They called out the Rameau Family Motorsports team for dragging a person out of their car and assaulting them to the point of hospitalization.

“There is a big difference between boys have at it (face to face fight) and then just plain chickens*** assault (entire crew drag a guy out of his car and hit him with a helmet),” wrote one fan.

“Chickens*** is about the best way to describe it. That’s not a fight, that’s a gang assault,” commented another user.

The anger was justified, considering how bad things turned out. No matter how bad an on-track incident may be, you cannot beat up a fellow driver.

“Not surprised, considering that he is banned from all ACT & PASS sanctioned tracks and events,” one fan said about the verdict.

Hopefully, NASCAR’s stern stance against Sam Rameau will dissuade drivers from completely losing their heads on the track. There have been a lot of similar incidents in the recent past and all it serves to do is tarnish NASCAR’s name.
