Is Kyle Larson‘s successor finally here? Well, the Hendrick Motorsports driver certainly seems to think so! It’s high praise for an up-and-coming driver in American motorsports to be compared to the former Cup Series champion. However, what’s even more impressive is when the comparison comes from the HMS star himself.

And, that’s exactly what 18-year-old race car driver Corey Day got after picking up an impressive victory in the High Limit Racing Midweek Money championship race at the Riverside International Speedway on Tuesday.

Perhaps Corey Day’s recent stats would explain why he garnered such high praise. After all, it was the driver’s second straight Midweek Money championship race win and third of the year. Evidently, the young driver is making a name for himself against some of the best sprint car racing drivers in the world, including even the World of Outlaws legend Brad Sweet.

After the race, Day was quite proud of himself as he explained how he and his team had to adjust to the changing track conditions and multiple red flags. While the prodigy’s day had already ended on a high note, Larson managed to take it a notch higher with his words.

He’s basically me. He’s better than I am, or I was obviously at that age. He is in a lot better rides than I was at that age. His race craft, his maturity on the track, off the track, like all that, he’s really, really good. He can run harder than anybody on the race track and be in control. So, he’s definitely the next kid coming up that probably will make it,” the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series said as per Sportsnaut.

His on-track skills have earned him $40,000 in a short span of time as he won two successive $20,000 Midweek Money Series races. While he had a good day on track, the same cannot be said for Kyle Larson, who was caught up in a dangerous accident as he tried to ride the wall.

A heart-in-mouth moment for Hendrick Motorsports with Yung Money

Perhaps the former Cup Series champion took inspiration from Ross Chastain’s Hail Melon at Martinsville, but the results were not the same. With 14 laps to go, Kyle Larson was running P3 behind Corey Day and Tanner Thornson. The 31-year-old seemed to have overshot his braking zone going into one of the turns and got really close to the wall. The NASCAR star could not avoid contact and maybe in a split second, decided to do some wall riding. However, sparks flew and his car was dropped on the ground, facing skyward.

It must have been a heart-in-mouth moment for Larson and everyone involved in the event, and even for those at Hendrick Motorsports, who were dangerously close to experiencing déjà vu. Last year, Alex Bowman suffered a serious racing injury during a sprint car event on April 25 (his birthday!), and has just not been the same driver ever since. So, naturally the Cup Series team cannot afford something like that with the driver of the #5 car as well. Thankfully, he came out unscathed, but precautions surely need to be taken by the 31-year-old NASCAR star.

Yung Money is not going to stop racing sprint cars anytime soon, despite there being the potential for crashes that can heavily injure a driver. Now that he’s the owner of a series, he will be doing his utmost to ensure its success. But is taking so many risks the wise thing to do? Let us know your thoughts.
