NASCAR has always been a sport of fine margins. Despite Hendrick Motorsports’ unparalleled success in stock car racing, technological innovation is no longer a luxury but a necessity for the team to maintain its dominance. Investing in cutting-edge facilities is key to remaining ahead of the curve, especially in an era where teams such as Joe Gibbs Racing, 23XI, and Team Penske are also competing for silverware every year. With the competition being more intense than ever before, Rick Hendrick’s team is breaking boundaries in pursuit of excellence.
Recently, the 14-time champions unveiled their latest addition, the Hexagon Metrology Lab in its shop based in Concord, North Carolina. The new machinery will allow Hendrick Motorsports to master the art of precision engineering to get an advantage over its competitors.

There’s no bigger name than Hendrick Motorsports in the NASCAR world. The team has set the standard for excellence through decades of dominance in the stock car racing series. While NASCAR continues to level the playing field through its Next-Gen cars and single-source suppliers, the company continues to find new ways to innovate and get that edge on the racetrack. Adapting, innovating, and implementing have helped Rick Hendrick’s team succeed across generations, with a significant amount of investment being made to become trailblazers in the sport.
Sharing his thoughts about the Hexagon Metrology Lab, Hall of Fame crew chief Chad Knaus said, “We’ve got a machine back there that we can stack up parts, and this robotic arm will pull the parts out of a shelf, lock it into the scanner. It will come through. It will measure this whole part. It will pick it back up, sort it, and put it where it needs to be. And we don’t have to do anything. All we have to do is program it. That saves hours and hours and hours of labor. There’s one thing in life you can’t replace and that’s time, right? So we have to get efficiencies.”
The Hexagon Metrology Lab is a state-of-the-art facility that allows race car components to be fine-tuned with precision to get better performance on the racetrack. Given how limited Next-Gen cars can be when it comes to customization options, teams are always looking to make marginal gains through every avenue they can take advantage of, and the new technology allows them to do just that. With the new facility, the team can examine, test, and optimize every component, ensuring the best performance can be squeezed out of the car during a race day.

Hendrick Motorsports’ keen attention to detail ensures that no aspect is overlooked ahead of the race. Keeping the little things in mind eventually leads to big results on the racetrack, a philosophy that Rick Hendrick’s team lives by in their pursuit of success. With Chase Elliott winning the Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray, HMS has already begun 2025 with a memorable triumph. Could they go on to break Team Penske’s dominance in the Cup Series this year? Time will tell.

Rick Hendrick’s vision expands beyond the racetrack
Trending
After ruling the NASCAR world for decades, Rick Hendrick is now shifting his attention beyond the motorsports world. The 75-year-old has announced the separation of Hendrick Motorsports Technical Solutions (HMTS), which is a standalone entity from the racing division. The massive 160,000-square-foot headquarters will be used for creating engineering and manufacturing solutions for commercial and government programs.
Veteran Corporate Executive Scott Lampe has been named the President of Advanced Manufacturing, who will oversee the day-to-day operations at the facility. The longtime HMS executive will directly report to Hendrick Company’s President Marshall Carlson, who said, “Rick Hendrick’s vision has always been about building for the future. He recognized Hendrick Motorsports Technical Solutions can be a leader in advanced manufacturing, serving customers with ultra-high requirements.”

The construction work for Hendrick Motorsports Technical Solutions began in November 2023 and was recognized as ‘GM Defense’s Supplier of the Year’ for the last three consecutive years. The facility gives alternate career options for those previously working in the motorsports world and comprises 140 employees as things stand, with 60 new members expected to join in the next 18 months. Rick Hendrick seems to be a man on a mission, and it’s only a matter of time before the 75-year-old builds a tech empire beyond his existing racing enterprise.
