Valvoline is set to sponsor Kyle Larson and William Byron from Hendrick Motorsports during the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series. With the new deal in place, Larson’s No.5 and William Byron’s No.24 will see a new paint scheme imprinted on their respective cars. The classic red, white, and dark blue design will be featured on the No.5 whereas the No.24 will see a base of grey with a touch of red and light blue.
The Valvoline-themed paint schemes will be on display at select five races throughout the season. Byron’s No.24 will feature the paint schemes on June 30th at Nashville, and on October 13th at Charlotte Roval. On the other hand, Larson’s No.5 will be donning this paint at Phoenix on March 10th, Sonoma on June 9th, and Chicago Street on July 7. While the race drivers and their antics on tracks have been questioned, it’s the paint schemes and their purpose that are slowly becoming the talks ahead of every season.

The OSS (Optical Scanning Station) is a system put in place by NASCAR to measure every inch and centimeter of the car. This is done using the 157,000 neon lasers that produce a virtual 3D rendering, these are of two types low-resolution and high-resolution. There has been a growing practice by NASCAR teams to incorporate a dark color, mostly back around the rear fenders and the bottom edge.
What’s the purpose of doing this? Well, for starters, when painted black the OSS uses high-resolution scanning that eats more time and somehow has a loophole that can be exploited. This tricks the system into thinking the car is narrower than its actual measurements. While several teams have been using this hack to cheat the system, with the new dark paint schemes of their own, perhaps Hendrick Motorsports are also leaning towards such practices.
A similar sentiment regarding the paint schemes of NASCAR teams was echoed by insider Eric Estepp. He hinted that the odd paint schemes on the cars were done on purpose by the designers. With the system being fairly new, being installed a handful of years ago, the system could measure and map the darker colors differently than the lighter ones. NASCAR is a sport where every inch and centimeter counts, driver and team found a chink in the armor of the OSS and went about their exploits.

New Look for 2024, read the caption of the post by Valvoline. Both the cars, No.5 and No.24 were seen doing hard laps on the racetracks donning their new paint schemes. While a majority of fans liked the new designs, a few of them connected their themes to the tricks of bypassing the OSS system.
A fan was quick to note this cheeky move by HMS and wrote, “Hopefully since y’all are doing the OSS bypassin schemes that means y’all are faster.” Another fan added, “Both dudes definitely gonna be doing some winnin next year.”
Apart from the fan theory, many poured in a specific request which was to paint Larson’s 24 number in yellow. Reactions included, “Put some yellow number on the 24!! C’mon!” and “24 needs to be day glow yellow for sure.”

While it is not sure if tricks with the OSS get you the championship, this would certainly not be a winning formula. Instead, Hendrick Motorsports can bank on William Byron who just was in his peak form during the 2023 season, with a 3rd place finish. While tricks of the trade are used by everyone, Hendrick Motorsports has not relied on them, for they are the winningest team in NASCAR and that is all credit to their drivers.
