When asked about his interaction with Ryan Preece, who recently showed up with bloodshot and bruised eyes, Byron acknowledged the severity of the situation. The young driver didn’t hesitate to point out that improvements can still be made in NASCAR’s safety protocols. Byron highlighted the physical ordeal that both Preece and Blaney went through in their respective crashes, saying,
“Yeah, definitely a different sight than we’ve seen in a while. I will say, the sprint car wrecks and some of the midget wrecks – I see guys that have had that happen.. not very often, but sometimes when they have flips. So a different sight, definitely, for a NASCAR driver to go through.”
“Yeah, hopefully we can continue to make it better. I think Ryan Blaney’s wreck and Ryan Preece’s – it was great to see those guys be OK. We’ve made a lot of progress, but I still feel like there’s some elements of that crash that could be a little bit better, like we talked about on Thursday – just the interaction with the grass and all those things. Hopefully, just keep making it better.”
During Lap 95 of the Coke Zero Sugar 400, Ryan Blaney survived a harrowing head-on collision. Astonishingly, he not only lived to tell the tale but attributes his survival to NASCAR’s relentless commitment to safety advancements. Blaney’s #12 Team Penske Ford Mustang bore the brunt of the crash, yet he emerged with a sore body rather than a sore head. The recent changes that softened the front clips of NASCAR Cup Series cars played a pivotal role in cushioning the impact, allowing Blaney to walk away from what could have been a catastrophic accident.
