In a thrilling showdown that went down a few hours earlier, Hendrick Motorsports’ star driver William Byron clinched his 6th win of the season, at the Texas Motor Speedway. Bypassing the likes of Bubba Wallace and teammate Kyle Larson, the 25-year-old secured his place in the round of 8. As his No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro sped past its competitors to the victory lane, one name that appeared on its livery stood out in pride. It was that of the car’s primary sponsor ‘Liberty University’.
The partnership between William and the university goes beyond just the racetrack. Talking to YouTube Eric Estepp before the Texas race, the driver boasted about the college’s credentials and the impact that it was having on NASCAR.

The No. 24 crew has been one of the most impressive on the grid throughout the year. Qualifying for the playoffs from the top of the drivers’ standing table, the team has once again found its way to the top. But for the sponsor of a racing car, there could be very few asks apart from this. Liberty University has been sponsoring the driver and his cars since 2014. With over 700 degrees ranging from the bachelor’s to the doctoral levels, Liberty is a private evangelical Christian university in Virginia. Talking to William about the then-upcoming race in Texas, Estepp asked the driver about his association with the college and if he has a “special” love for grads from the school.
Talking about the expanse that the school has reached over the last few years, William got into providing an insight into how the programs offered help shape NASCAR. He said, “So I feel like I do run into race fans, and people in the, even people in the garage that have engineering jobs or roles inside the sport that went to Liberty. So it’s a pretty big community. It’s good to see their reach and also see the jobs that they provide. You know for people in the racing industry, that you know have gotten their education there and taken that and ran with it.”
Despite the role that Liberty University and its programs could be playing in creating careers in the tracks of NASCAR, William’s words could be from a soft spot, considering that the 25-year-old himself is a student at the college.

It is an unstated fact that in every sport, sponsors offer their athletes material allowances that keep morale and spirits high. For William Byron, it is rather a college degree that will suffice his wants. Currently a student at Liberty, he is pursuing his B.S. in Strategic Communication through the college’s online program. Back in 2021, when Hendrick Motorsports had agreed to a 5-year extension of their contract with Liberty, he’d said, “I’m proud to represent an institution like Liberty University. (…) They inspire a lot of people my age to pursue their passions, and I look forward to continuing to represent them on and off the racetrack.”
Currently, in the 2nd year of the multi-year contract, the driver’s thoughts aren’t any different. Talking about how the university has impacted his life, he revealed how he is associated with both the academic and the sports side of it. He said, “…getting to know the football coaches and all the different sports at Liberty. So it’s been really cool to have such a connection and obviously going to online schooling with them over the years has been a huge deal. You know, that’s progressed my education and I’m working towards finishing my degree in strategic communication.”

Hoping that he will have something to look back on when he hangs up his racing suit and gloves for retirement, William wishes that he gets to finish his degree. With the busy schedule behind the wheel, the thought of wanting to complete his business degree is as commendable as his racing performance.
