At Pocono Raceway’s Pole Qualifying, William Byron of Hendrick Motorsports proved his prowess by earning the first pole position. Byron’s impressive 57.746 seconds (170.235 mph) in the #24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet put him at the front of the pack for Sunday’s HighPoint 400 race. Alongside him, his championship rival Martin Truex Jr. was just 0.122 seconds slower, setting the stage for a thrilling race start.
“Big thanks to all the guys back at the shop for working hard and getting our cars close. I‘m proud of this one,” said Byron. “Definitely, tomorrow‘s a long day, so rehydrate and re-group. I‘ve had a long week of racing, so hopefully, tomorrow will be a good result for us. It would be nice to get a win.”
Kyle Larson finished in the second spot in the exhilarating playoff. Byron’s performance at Pocono Raceway is especially crucial as he is 17 points behind Truex in the race for the regular season championship. With four wins, Byron is determined to secure a victory and close the points gap. As the reigning series champion, Truex is equally determined to maintain his lead and add more playoff points to his tally.

Last year’s Pocono winner Chase Elliott spun during his opening-round qualifying lap but avoided any contact with the barriers. Unfortunately, he will start at the rear of the field to defend his trophy and secure a position in the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs. On the other hand, Alex Bowman’s 20th-place finish indicates that he might need a win to secure a playoff spot.
Looking at the bigger picture, 11 drivers have already clinched a spot in the playoff field 16, leaving limited opportunities for others to secure their positions. With Elliott and Bowman potentially needing a win to make the playoffs, the competition is heating up, and every point matters.
