With a handful of races remaining in the picture, Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin has yet again taken over the conversation. Despite donning the villain role and embracing his dark side, Hamlin, ahead of Sunday’s race in Homestead-Miami, let out a startling revelation—one that can be detrimental to his success.

The 42-year-old bathed in negativity when he took over the race in Bristol, acing the short track and burning the hostile crowd with a live roast as he edged out his friend-turned-rival Kyle Larson for the win. The venue echoed Hamlin’s swagger when he said to the crowd, “I beat your favorite driver.” However, as the playoff extravaganza reaches its course at the intermediate track in Miami, Hamlin seems to have a change of heart. From hailing this to be the year of #11, Hamlin’s “not at that level” revelation has caused the community to think as the veteran openly revealed his inferiority to the HMS ace.

While racing certainly rewards the risk-takers, the ones who go beyond their limits, it is also a sport that aligns well with the organized and methodical approach drivers often employ. After all, racing is a game of inches and milliseconds, which can change the course of a race at any given instance. Well, at what front do you see Hamlin? Is he a risk-taker, or is he more of a calculated driver?

Denny Hamlin, according to him, is more of an organized driver than just a fanatic who is always ready to pounce, taking huge risks for smaller rewards. Ahead of his Sunday’s run in Miami, Hamlin was asked about how he would fair against Larson and his driver Tyler Reddick when it came to running the high lanes, close to the wall.

Mentioning his wins at the tracks where the game demands risks, taking the high lane, Hamlin said,I think I’m better than average but certainly not at the level that I feel like those 2 guys are in particular either, just they’re willing to take a little bit more risk than I’m its just kind of depends on the scenario.”

While the driver tried to put things in a much more concise manner, he spilled a bit more, thus revealing his inferiority to the HMS rival. “I just manage risk a bit different so I just, I’m not willing to fight for that little extra inch there to try to gain you know a really small amount of lap time. If I can make that lap time somewhere else I’ll do that so yeah there’s certain guys that are just a little better,” said Hamlin admitting his shortcoming.

Couple this with his recent heel turn, and we’ve got a certified villain in NASCAR. While the driver is often known for his bump-and-run finishes and hypocritical stances, the man doesn’t shy away from giving credit where it is due. Even in his pre-race interview, where he praised Kyle Larson and Tyler Reddick for their ability to ride the high lanes close to the wall, Denny Hamlin poked one at Larson, who is often lauded as a once-in-a-generation talent, when asked, “Any idea on what makes him so good at what he does?”

The 42-year-old said, “Other than willing to take a few more risks, not really. I haven’t noticed anything out of the ordinary.” Denny Hamlin further added, saying, “There are some very minor things here and there but nothing I’ll share publically. There’s nothing that jumps off the page, just a couple of really small things.”
