The annual double-header weekend at Indianapolis finally came to a culmination after offering a nail-biting performance by the drivers. The Cup Series race at IMS surely lived up to the expectations as it was able to deliver a unique spectacle, where the race unfolded in layers, with a feel-good win at the end.

While the calm Michael McDowell took Front Row Motorsports’ #34 Ford to the Victory Lane, a few other drivers also deserved credit for striving hard. Among them is the Hendrick Motorsports duo of Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman. The two drivers exhibited a dominant performance throughout the course of the race and secured top-5 finishes. However, amidst the dejection of losing out and the desperation to earn a playoff berth setting in, Alex Bowman revealed his Achilles Heel ahead of the next race at Watkins Glen.

It will surely be not a stretch to assert the fact that the 2023 season is not the season that Hendrick Motorsports was hoping for. After clinching the regular season championship with #9 Chevy last year, the winningest team of NASCAR has shown signs of struggles. Apart from William Byron, the other three drivers have not lived up to their potential. Even Larson, despite two wins, has seen devastating results many times over. However, circumstances were on the verge of changing during the Indianapolis race, but it was in vain as Chase Elliott was unable to force an error out of McDowell.

Moreover, Bowman also flinched on the track when Shane van Gisbergen made contact with him at Lap 10, but the HMS driver was able to control his car. However, with the Cup race at IMS done and dusted, his eyes would be now at Watkins Glen, the second last race of the regular season. Bowman talked about it in the post-race interview, saying, “Yeah, I’ll take a win any week, especially at road course

“I think we will have a shot at it. I think here and Watkins Glen are by far my weakest road courses, but you know, Mr. Hendrick and everybody gives us all the tools we need to excel in all these places. Obviously learned since the last time I was here and improved a lot, so hopefully we can do the same at Watkins Gen.”

Moreover, it is not just the road courses that are the only hindrances that the driver is facing at this crucial juncture. The notion of dejection has made its way into the mind of the driver, especially after encountering a harrowing accident.

In an interview with Frontstretch media earlier, Bowman had revealed, “I mean, for me it’s been interesting, cause I feel like we couldn’t really do it do much wrong. Before I got hurt, you know, we were running really well every week, you know, we’re really good at points, really good average finish. And since then, anytime we’re running well, something happens and when we’re bad you can’t put us out of our misery.

“So it’s really just been a complete 180 of where we were at I feel like… I don’t think that’s come from you know somebody doing something or a change. I feel like a sport has a lot of ups and flows and you know, we were up when I left and I came back when we’re a little bit down. But you know we’ve had good speed lately. So I think we’re we’re on the good side of things.”
