Ross Chastain has earned fans and haters alike. The Trackhouse Racing driver’s aggressive racing style has left many people in disarray. Although fans have been divided, and some have even gone on to extend their support to Chastain for bringing the aggression back to NASCAR, the drivers have not particularly liked it.

The weekend at Darlington was another instance of his antics coming to the fore. Chastain has roughed up Kyle Larson on the track for the second time this season as they both fought for the lead with six laps left. The unfortunate incident saw Ross sliding into Larson as he squeezed the Hendrick Motorsports ace into the fence. HMS owner Rick Hendrick has voiced his displeasure over the crash as he puts Chastain’s unruly acts in the spotlight. The targeted accusations have brought out comparisons to NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt, renowned for his aggression.

In a battle for the lead, Chastain and Larson pushed each other to the brim of their abilities. But due to that very incident, both of the drivers ended up outside the top-15 places. Larson left the car disappointed as he ended up in the 20th position. Certainly a painful result after vying for the lead, with only six laps remaining. Following the incident, owner Rick Hendrick was furious as the crash cost them a lot of valuable points and a potential win.

As reported by Yahoo Sports, in a post-race interview, Hendrick shed light on his feelings about the wreck. Venting out his dissatisfaction, he says, “It’s really getting old with these guys. I don’t care if he’s driving a Chevrolet if he wrecks our cars, I don’t care. I’ve told Chevrolet that. If you wreck us, you’re going to get it back.”

He also adds that Chastain has been very rowdy with his approach on the track and his aggression is many times unwarranted. Further highlighting the consequences of his acts, he says, “He’s going to make a lot of enemies. It’s hard to win a championship when you’ve got a lot of paybacks out there.”

The domino effect of the incident has been felt throughout the industry. Some demand to curb the excessive aggression of Chastain, while some believe that this is something that is much needed for the growth of NASCAR. Well, in another turn of events Chastain also earns himself some comparisons with 7-time Cup Series champion Dale Earnhardt Sr.

Racing is something that runs in the Earnhardt family. Dale Jr has continued the legacy of his father, a revered figure in NASCAR history. Now, it seems, listening to the recent warning from the HMS owner to Chastain has made the Hall of Famer experience déjà vu.

Talking to co-host Mike Davis on his ‘Dale Jr Download’ podcast, the two-time Xfinity champion talks about the old days when this would have been considered a norm. The rivalry between Dale Sr and Geoff Bodine is one of the remarkable examples of beefing on the track. As he looked back to the atmosphere in the mid-80s, he said, “We’ve had Geoff Bodine on the show right? And so I think everybody if you experienced that like we did, you get the gist of what kind of guy he is. He’s always just a little unique in his sense of humor and so for.”

“And man him and dad do not get along, they race together for a while before they would finally start beating and banging and have beef, and 85 pretty much through 86-87 they reckon each other quite a bit, mainly at Charlotte Motor Speedway but not exclusive to that.”

Coming back to the current situation, he brings back memories of Hendrick going at it over Dale Sr’s aggression. Not just that, he highlights the resemblance between the two situations as history repeats itself.

“It got pretty rough, I remember Rick Hendrick saying basically near the same thing about Dad around 86-87 as he did about Ross this weekend. Were they not similar? I mean somewhat”
