Among those racers is a Brazilian racing phenomenon, who can easily be touted as the 21st-century king of IndyCar. Helio Castroneves is that individual, and the 4-time Indianapolis 500 winner will bring a wealth of experience and an army of eyes to NASCAR. But before we discuss his Daytona 500 prospects, let us delve into Castroneves’ background a bit.

Who is Helio Castroneves?

Picture two decades filled with prestigious motorsports victories. Yes, Helio Castroneves is an automotive star who set the racing world on fire since his first CART series victory at the 2000 Detroit Grand Prix. He drove for Roger Penske then, and it was only his 7th start in Team Penske. After that, it was a story of relentless success. Castroneves owns the 2001, 2002, 2009, and 2021 Indianapolis 500 wins. He won the 2020 IMSA championship along with 4 victories and 4 pole positions with Acura Team Penske. Castroneves is only the fourth driver to own four Borg-Warner trophies. AJ Foyt, Rick Mears, and Al Unser Sr. are the other faces in this elite group. However, they are no match for Castroneves’ off-track talents. He is an established dancer and won the 2007 “Dancing with the Stars” competition on ABC Television with Julianne Hough. Helio Castroneves has also been a guest on the ‘Oprah Winfrey Show,’ a correspondent on ‘Entertainment Tonight’ and a judge at the 2011 Miss Universe competition.

From karting racing to 4x Indy 500 champion: Helio Castroneves racing exploits

Well, a racing legend will always have amazing roots. Helio Castroneves was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He was 2 years old when his family moved to Ribeirão Preto, SP. His passion for racing set in at 12 years of age, and his family – parents Helio and Sandra, and big sister Kati – supported him. Thence began an illustrious journey – Castroneves raced go-karts from 1987 to 1991 and even collected a National Championship. Subsequently, his Formula racing kicked off – he clinched 2nd place in the Formula Chevrolet championship in 1992, and in 1995, Castroneves finished third in the 1995 British Formula Three standings.

Have an interesting take?

Helio Castroneves began his American open-wheel racing chapter in 1996. After dabbling in the Indy Lights Series for three years, Roger Penske handed him his big break for the 2000 CART season, and Castroneves fetched instant success. In 2001, he competed in his first Indianapolis 500 with Penske. He wasted little time as he won that race on debut – and followed it up with a consecutive win in 2002, scripting history. Castroneves won his third Indy 500 trophy in 2009 and then thundered into an elite four-driver group with his fourth win in 2021.

Will Helio Castroneves be able to prove his mettle in the Daytona 500?

The Brazilian speedster will wheel Trackhouse Racing‘s Project 91 car at the Daytona 500, with veteran crew chief Darian Grubb atop the pit box. However, his appearance at the ‘World Center of Racing’ on February 16th will not be the first. Helio Castroneves ran 16 IROC races (2002-2005) and starts in the Supercars and Brazil stock car series. Some of those races were at the 2.5-mile superspeedway. Castroneves is also a three-time winner of the Rolex 24 at Daytona, consecutively in 2021, 2022, and 2023. So his prospects for NASCAR’s crown jewel event do look dazzling.

If Castroneves were to win, he would join AJ Foyt and Mario Andretti in winning both the Indy 500 and the Daytona 500. The last Indy 500 winner to attempt the NASCAR race was Jacques Villeneuve in 2022. What is most important is the racer’s unbridled enthusiasm, which was apparent when he thanked his team and sponsor Wendy’s. “This is an opportunity that nobody in their right mind could ever turn down. I am so thankful to Wendy’s for allowing me to wear their uniform and drive their car, (Trackhouse owner) Justin Marks and everyone that made this happen. I wish the race were tomorrow!”

Is a full-time seat waiting for Helio Castroneves after the Project 91 stint?

Project 91 under Trackhouse Racing has produced some jaw-dropping race finishes. Trackhouse owner Justin Marks created it in 2021 as an inlet for internationally renowned drivers to try their hands at NASCAR. It hosted 2007 Formula One World Champion Kimi Räikkönen at Watkins Glen and Circuit of the Americas in 2022. Shane van Gisbergen came next in 2023, and scripted history – he won the Chicago Street Race, which was also his debut NASCAR race! SVG’s fortunes snowballed, as he got a full-time ride in Xfinity in 2024, and is now waiting to begin his full-time Cup Series career in 2025. So will Helio Castroneves also be able to accomplish the same?

Maybe, depending on the IndyCar champion’s Daytona 500 effort. So Helio Castroneves is focusing all his attention on the race. He recently likened his attempt to his groovy moves on TV. “Will be everything new, will be certainly, just like I went to Dancing with the Stars; I have no idea what’s going to happen. So it was pretty much the same as I’m going to go, follow the lead of the group.” Marks is enthralled by simply his presence in NASCAR, though. “Helio is one of the greatest drivers of all time and exactly the type of driver we want to bring to NASCAR. I think race fans around the world will be excited to see Helio in NASCAR’s most prestigious race.”

Clearly, Helio Castroneves is whipping up a storm ahead of the Daytona 500. We cannot wait to see him buckle up and taste a bit of core NASCAR!
