Chase Elliott snatched victory during the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. However, the real action unfolded behind him and involved two top title contenders. As it played out, Cole Custer and Austin Hill tangled with each other, and Custer came away even worse. It is safe to say that the Tony Stewart-backed driver was absolutely fuming with the Richard Childress Racing star.

The incident occurred with 17 laps remaining, and they were squabbling for the top 15. Frankly, for a driver with two wins and a defending NASCAR Xfinity Series champion, 15th was far from ideal. Hill then attempted a move on his rival and bumped his rear end, sending him into a spin and into the outside wall.

What made matters worse was that Custer got his revenge when they went door-to-door. They then passed the point of no return when Hill floored it and they wrecked further. Cole Custer told Frontstretch, “Yeah, I mean, he put me in the fence off of 4. Then we hit on the front stretch cause I was going to pinch him down. He decided to try and go and side-draft me and we hit again. I don’t know if he blew a tire into one or what happened. Then he tried to kill me on the backstretch and just held it full throttle until he wrecked our car.”

“Killed the rear clip, slapped my head against the back of the headrest. I know it was hard racing, but at the end of the day, I don’t like getting intentionally wrecked and killing the front and rear clip of our race car. It’s just ridiculous, so if he wants to drive like a p*ssed off teenager, it’s just ridiculous.”

Let it not be said that the Stewart Haas Racing driver was not furious. He genuinely felt that Austin Hill put him in danger. Hill insisted that he was innocent and laid the blame at Custer’s feet. According to him, Custer’s stunt was uncalled for, and there was no need to trash his car. It is also worth mentioning that the squabbling duo also appeared to bump into Sheldon Creed early in the race. Although Creed survived, he later retired due to a brake issue.

Did Austin Hill shoulder some of the blame?

Cole Custer and the #21 Chevy driver Hill were battling to get into the top 15 with 17 laps to go when Hill clipped the bumper of Custer’s #00 Ford. An aggressive move by Austin Hill forced Custer into a high-speed spin and a harder hit into the inside wall. It started when Hill was doored by Custer on the straightway, which cut a tire on the #21 Chevy. As a result, Hill kept the throttle down in retaliation.

The clash between SHR driver Custer and RCR driver Hill led to a final restart, which resulted in a P25 and P32 finish for the drivers, respectively. The 12th Xfinity race of the 2024 season witnessed Chase Elliott’s first Xfinity Series race win since 2016 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Later, the #21 driver did confess that he probably overreacted during the race. He acknowledged that the retaliation was not on, but Custer’s contact was ‘dumb’. Ahead of the next race weekend in Portland, it will be crucial for both drivers to have a take on each other. Clear the air between them so that they don’t get caught in an endless cycle of revenge.
