Several years ago, Hendrick Motorsports duo Jimmie Johnson and Chase Elliott appeared as guests on a talk show. In a small conversation with Young Hollywood’s Lesley Robins, they talked about how to handle fame. To elaborate further, they discussed how to interact with fans and gain their favor.

At that, Johnson acknowledged Elliott’s popularity and confessed that he was probably the expert. The 7-time Cup champion said, “I think I might need to seek advice from him on this one. With his father’s history in the sport, and then with the way he’s handling everything. The pressure of coming up through the ranks, I might need advice from him.”

Of course, the #9 driver was quick to retort and get his own back at the NASCAR living legend. He insisted Johnson had things covered and could handle himself. Elliott quipped, “No he doesn’t need my help. Don’t let him fool you, he’s had it figured out for years. We all know better than that.”

Johnson’s comments were a reference to Chase’s father, Bill Elliott. As it turned out, the former champion was a multiple-time Most Popular Driver recipient, having won it 16 times. Of course, Dale Earnhardt Jr. had had a stranglehold on the Most Popular Driver crown for a really long time.

However, after Dale Jr’s retirement, Chase Elliott took up the cudgels and has been dominating. Now, for the 2022 edition of the awards, Elliott is campaigning for another award to add to his collection. However, there are several other drivers who are campaigning just as hard. One of them is Ryan Blaney, who was not shy to take a few cheeky digs and trash-talk with his opponent. Voting opened earlier this month and is going to end on November 30th, and the results declared soon.
