The intensity of a Cup Series playoff race is unmatched. Sky-high stakes amidst a rush of adrenaline combine to create an atmosphere befitting the importance of the race. However, during these times, one could use a lighthearted moment to slow things down and recollect their composure. It looks like Bubba Wallace has mastered the art of it.

23XI Racing’s #23 driver has had a season of firsts in 2023. A first playoff appearance after a grilling regular season and a round of 12 stints has taken his career to new heights. The happiness was reflected at the Homestead-Miami Speedway, as Bubba Wallace craved some nuggets in the middle of the race, thus giving rise to a wholesome and comic conversation with his crew.

Bubba Wallace and 23XI Racing shared radio footage of the humorous incident on their social media handles on Instagram. The conversation on the team radio began during a stage break as the drivers were returning to their pits. Spotter for #23, Freddie Kraft, initiated the topic of food as Bubba Wallace seemed to like his intent and chimed in instantly. The No. 23 driver signaled, “Since we got time, give me a bottle and a tear-off,” to which the seasoned spotter replied, “You want something to eat?”

Bubba Wallace then, upon deep consideration, arrived at the conclusion of wanting to feast on some nuggets. Being partnered with fast-food chain giant McDonald’s, the 30-year-old must have had a particular affinity for nuggets. He answered, “Yeah. Give me uhh… give me some nuggets please.”

“You want extra salt cause the salt content might keep you hydrated. It will keep you from cramping because you might drink more,” came another statement from the team radio, which then instigated Bubba Wallace to also add another order from another one of his sponsors, Dr. Pepper.“That’s actually a good point. I’ll do a large fry. Dr. Pepper.”

After some time, the team radio rang again as it relayed a message about an uninformed order of some cookies, which said, “They just delivered a batch of cookies up here.” A sarcastic Bubba then commented, “Sounds like you ate the whole damn batch.”

“How about a special order here? Grab an extra bottle. Put a little Dr. Pepper in it and some ice. I’ll just toss that one out when I’m done with it.” added Bubba as he listed the items for his special order. The conversation added some much-needed humor to an otherwise intense race filled with crashes and retirements.

Earlier in July, in honor of its mascot, Grimace, McDonald’s announced the sale of Grimace Shakes across the country. The event went on to become a big deal as it eventually turned into an internet meme, with the company changing their profile pictures across social media to a photo of Grimace looking at a purple shake with some whipped cream.

Some of the fans were quick to point that out, having seen the Grimace feature on Bubba’s #23 Camry, as they commented, “Top tier branding”. Another comment implied the same as it read, “He did the damn meme!”

Another fan praised Bubba and his crew for bringing such light-hearted moments into the sport, as he wrote, “If you got a race in person and rent a scanner, you’re doing yourself a disservice if you’re not listening to bubbas radio. Seriously. I don’t care who your favorite driver is – Bubba, Bootie, and Freddie are better.”

I swear Bubba has had the best scanner to listen to all season” read another comment pointing out the same observation. Another fan noticed that nuggets might be the root of Bubba’s loss in position through the race, as he added, “Is this why we went from 2nd and 3rd to way behind @bubbawallace? Lol. We were cheering all day! And you’re eating nuggets!”

Such moments are what make the sport a better version of itself. Not just comic relief, but these can also help create a connection between the fans and the teams.
