The NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Ricky Rudd’s racing career is a testament to resilience and determination. Over his 32-year-long career, Rudd competed in 906 races, winning 23 times, earning 194 top-five finishes, and claiming 29 poles. His relentless pursuit of victory made him one of NASCAR’s most durable and respected drivers.
However, Rudd’s reputation was more than stats; his toughness stood out. Whether racing through injuries or enduring grueling conditions, Rudd always pushed his limits. He never shied away from making bold moves on racetracks to win the fight. His dedication and never-give-up attitude earned him the title of ‘Ironman.’
One of the biggest examples of his fighting nature was the 1994 Coca-Cola 600 race. A heated wheel-to-wheel battle with Jeff Gordon produced one of the most dramatic incidents of his racing career. This clash not only highlighted Rudd’s fiery nature, but also uniquely garnered fan support.

Ricky Rudd’s unwanted message for Jeff Gordon
The October 1994 Winston Cup race at Charlotte Motor Speedway was unforgettable. Dale Earnhardt clinched his seventh championship that day, but the spotlight also fell on the clash between Ricky Rudd and Jeff Gordon. The two drivers fought hard for position when Gordon made an aggressive move, cutting in front of Rudd and forcing him dangerously close to the fence. Rudd, known for standing his ground, decided to send Gordon a message.
“I intended to send Jeff a message, but not to wreck him. If it had been Rusty Wallace or Dale Earnhardt, there might have been an incident, but not a wreck. Jeff hasn’t been out here very long, and he couldn’t handle me pushing him down the front stretch,” Rudd explained later.

Notably, Rudd aggressively maneuvered against Gordon between turns 3 and 4. The contact led to both drivers crashing by turn one, leaving their cars damaged. Rudd’s comment reflected his belief that Gordon lacked the experience to handle aggressive racing tactics. His frustration was palpable, and the incident turned into one of the most talked-about moments of the season.
However, this incident didn’t go well with NASCAR officials. The sanctioning body found Rudd guilty and imposed a massive $10,000 fine on him. The penalty didn’t sit well with Rudd’s loyal fanbase, who believed it was excessive. In a show of solidarity, fans raised $3000 to help Rudd pay the fine. Touched by their support, Rudd returned the money with heartfelt “Thank You” notes. Despite such a huge incident, the relationship between Jeff Gordon and Ricky Rudd remained unchanged.

Before their infamous Charlotte clash, Ricky Rudd and Jeff Gordon had raced as teammates for Hendrick Motorsports. The 1993 season was Gordon’s rookie season in Cup Series while Rudd ran his last with HMS. In 1994, Rudd launched his racing team, Rudd Performance Sports, and started participating in NASCAR with it. So far, Rudd and Gordon had built this relationship on mutual respect.
Their relationship took a sharp turn during the 1994 incident. Gordon later recalled the altercation with a mix of humor and humility. “I almost got in a fight with Ricky Rudd one time. And I’m quite certain I would have lost that fight. He basically pushed me down the front straightaway and ended up wrecking both of us by the time we got to Turn one. We had to get in an ambulance together to come back to the infield care center and we had many, many choice words,” Gordon said.
However, this didn’t last long, as a hilarious mishap restored their relationship. Days after the incident, Rudd accidentally drove into the driveway of Gordon’s new house. Gordon recalled how the awkward moment turned into a lighthearted conversation, with both drivers apologizing and moving on from the incident.

“This car comes down the driveway, and I wondered who that is. I walked up, the car stopped right about the time I realized it was Ricky and his wife. They were just out and about looking at houses. He wanted to back up fast, I could tell, but he didn’t, and we kind of laughed about it, talked about the incident, both apologized and then we were done,” Gordon recalled the incident.
This amusing encounter marked a turning point in their relationship. What started as a fierce rivalry evolved into mutual respect, showcasing the human side of racing. Despite their differences, Rudd and Gordon’s shared passion for the sport eventually bridged the gap between them. Notably, Gordon broke Rudd’s record of the most consecutive race starts in 2015 and currently serves as vice president of Hendrick Motorsports.
