Does Ty Gibbs' outburst show passion or immaturity? Where do you stand on this debate?

It is quite easy to get frustrated during a race if the car isn’t performing as it is supposed to. Such situations have brought about a lot of drama in the past where drivers have gone full-throttle at their teams on the radio. These situations are not ideal for either the driver or the teams, but in the end, there isn’t much you can do. Ty Gibbs faced a similar situation back in August, and the fallout from his actions is starting to catch up with him.

Ty Gibbs ended the Richmond race 22nd on the grid, and the driver expected a better finish. It was the third race in a row for Gibbs, where he couldn’t break the 20th bar. His frustrations are now becoming visible to everyone. Although it has been 2 months since the race and the regular season is long over, footage from his outburst at Richmond has surfaced online. Many fans have taken notice of Gibbs’ reaction on the radio, and according to many, it was quite distasteful.

Ty Gibbs had a tough day at the 2024 Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway, and you could hear it on the radio. From the start, his car was just not cooperating, making it super hard for him to keep up with the leaders. It was like wrestling with a stubborn bull, as it turned out that no matter how hard he tried, the car just wouldn’t handle the way he needed it to.

When Gibbs realized that his car was not performing how he wanted it to, he went on a berserk rant on the radio, most of which could not be understood. What was understood, though, is the fact that he dropped multiple ‘F’ bombs while telling his crew chief the issue he was facing with his car.

Chris Gayle, who was Ty Gibbs’s crew chief during the race, tried to explain to the driver that the team had tried different things to make the car turn better. However, instead of taking Gayle’s word for it, Gibbs continued to vent out on the radio. At one point, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver disbelieved in how badly his car was driving

However, because of how badly the car was driven, Gibbs was convinced that the way was heading in the “wrong way,” as his frustrations continued to show on the radio. This was not appreciated by many fans who didn’t like the way the driver spoke to the team, and that started getting obvious in the comments section on Reddit.

Unhappy fans share a piece of their mind with Ty Gibbs

It was obvious that fans didn’t like how Ty Gibbs behaved on the radio, and much of it came down to the fact that he is the owner’s grandson. One fan compared Gibbs’ demeanor to two different drivers on the grid, saying that Ty acts like “Michael McDowell in the sheets, Kurt Busch in the streets.” In this reference, it is McDowell who is brought up for his reliability on the tracks, while he was called a Kurt Busch for his colorful language that has everyone talking about it.

“Guy, I don’t like yells at crew: I HATE HIM. Guy, I do like yells at crew: HE’S SO PASSIONATE!” said one fan. This fan shows how differently each fan reacts to a driver’s action depending on whether they like the driver. In cases where a driver they don’t like starts yelling at the team, fans often tend to hate them, but when it’s a driver that they are a fan of, they get love for their “passion.”

One comment took a deeper dive into Gibbs’s past statements, referencing when he said that “99% of mental health issues/anxiety can be prayed away.” This fan couldn’t help but wonder why he didn’t channel that faith instead of going off on his team. It raised eyebrows and sparked some serious conversation about how athletes handle pressure.

On the flip side, not everyone was ready to jump on the hate train. One fan noted, “Ah jeez, I dislike this kid as much as the next guy, but this doesn’t seem any worse than anything I’ve heard from other drivers.” That comment struck a chord, suggesting that while Gibbs’s outburst wasn’t ideal, it wasn’t exactly groundbreaking in the racing world.

And then, of course, there were the fans who were just fed up. One exasperated commenter simply stated, “I’ve never disliked a driver this much,” which really summed up the sentiment for a segment of fans who were just done with Gibbs’s antics. All in all, it was a classic case of racing fans being split down the middle—some empathizing with his frustrations, while others were quick to cast judgment.
