Fans at the Berlin Raceway last night saw some great SRX racing. Cup series winners Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski brought much-needed energy onto the track after last week’s hazardous race at Strafford. Racking up his second consecutive win, Busch showed no signs of stopping as he carried on the momentum from Strafford. Another driver who had a strong performance last evening was Hailie Deegan.

The 22-year-old Truck Series driver had a fifth-place finish that will give her some relief after having to bow out of the race after getting tangled in Paul Tracy’s crash last week. The exuberant Deegan spoke to Frontstretch about one of the essential aspects of racing at Berlin Raceway, which can hurt one’s chances at the track if not taken care of.

When asked if this is her first time racing at the track, she said, “No, I haven’t been to Berlin before. Heard a lot about it.” For a debut on the track, she produced a highlight-worthy performance and hoped to carry on the form to her unfortunate Truck Series campaign.

The raceway is infamous for its dry roads that wear out the tires at an incredible rate. Hailie said that the venue lived up to its reputation, and racing in Tony Stewart’s series has made her aware of drivers’ hardships.

“It’s definitely one of those tracks people talk about when they’re talking about tracks that eat up tires, the tires wear super bad, low grip. Gotta really take care of yourself so I think that this is one of the tracks that have kind of haunted me like my man, you know, I don’t really feel like I’m missing out not going to Berlin when people talk about it.”

She managed to effectively use her new set of tires, moving up the track alongside Marco Andretti. Her run up into the race was quite solid as well, with a third-place finish in the second heat race. The second heat race was shortened by rain and Hailie ensured not to lose her position back to Stewart-Haas Racing driver Kevin Harvick.

“But honestly after coming here and driving the car that we had, I think that overall tonight has really taught me a lot about tire management,” said Hailie Deegan. Tire management is one of the most important areas to focus on for a team. For example, an incredible display of tire management helped Kyle Larson win the championship in 2021.

There weren’t many races that I had growing up racing stock cars or whatever it is, late models… There weren’t many races where I had to manage tires like how I did tonight so I think I learned a lot from the other veteran guys around me. We got some good experience, had some hard racing and it was fun,” revealed Hailie as she learned the essence of tire management and that too on such a tough track.

Apart from Deegan, Ryan Newman continued his streak of podiums with a third-place finish. Newman and SRX continue their love story since last year after the wins at Stafford. Meanwhile, Busch continues his hotrod form with a second win in two weeks and RFK Racing owner Keselowski will have more to celebrate after Richmond.
