Is Kyle Larson losing his edge, or was Chicago just a fluke?

The Chicago Street Race took a dramatic turn today, flipping everything on its head as key contenders took an unexpected exit. First, it was Shane van Gisbergen, and then Kyle Larson followed with a DNF. After a lengthy red flag, the race finally went back to green, and the drivers were fiercely battling for track position.

In Turn 6, Larson was making a bold move on Ty Gibbs but couldn’t quite pull it off. He instead, ended up locking his tires and, unable to steer, crashed into the tire barrier. The No. 5 Chevy was in rough shape, with the entire front end pretty much destroyed. Larson had to crawl back to the pits to salvage what he could.

It was a disappointing outcome for the #5 team, especially with the regular season title at stake. Larson commented via Frontstretch, “I’m pretty sure I just locked up, locked the front brakes. As soon as I hit the brake pedal, I wasn’t slowing down. It’s a tricky corner with a heavy brake zone, so I probably should’ve been more cautious.”

His elimination from the race allows the likes of Christopher Bell, Denny Hamlin, and Chase Elliott to further improve their positions in the points standings. Well aware of this fact, the HMS star added, “I mean, it just brings everybody closer yet again. I’m sure he’ll be actually the point leader depending on if he finishes where he is running.”

However, this wreck allowed a few fans to get on his case with their sarcastic views on social media platforms.

Now everyone knows that the Larson-Hamlin rivalry has blossomed well in recent weeks. Interestingly, the JGR star also found himself sideways, unable to find a grip on the wet surface. However, this fan linked the two incidents to troll Larson, “Larson had to out-hack Denny. Truly a rivaly.”

The impact was so massive that the entire concrete block onto which the fencing was mounted was moving. Larson did try to put his car in reverse while trying to untangle himself from the tire barrier, but his efforts were in vain. Ultimately, his car came to a standstill, and had to be rescued by the safety crew. Continuing the theme of making fun of his failed attempts, another fan replied, “You can’t park there.”

Well, the trolling certainly didn’t stop there. This race fan questioned Larson’s thought process in trying to make a low percentage move on a corner that was tricky throughout the race, “Larson for the winning move!.”

Not long before, the HMS star was compared to the likes of Max Verstappen as the best race car driver. However, it looks like he might need a few road racing lessons, especially on how to race in wet conditions. If he manages that, perhaps he could be back in that best driver conversation, “Greatest driver on earth.”

One user even predicted that NASCAR might be hesitant to return to Chicago Street Racing just because Larson hasn’t been able to fire off at these events. “Maybe they won’t ever come back to this “racetrack” since their golden boy wrecked.”

It’s a tough break that Kyle Larson’s Chicago outing ended with a DNF. With SVG out of the race, it was a golden opportunity for Larson to secure a victory. Despite the setback, Mr. H’s garage will still have a reason to celebrate, and the No. 5 driver might even raise a bourbon toast to his teammate; Alex Bowman, for securing his spot in the playoffs. Did you like Bowman’s run today?
