Radio conversations between NASCAR drivers and crew chiefs are interesting, to say the least. However, Bubba Wallace and his crew chief, Bootie Barker, took it a notch up with their entertaining conversation. Coming off a late restart in the race last weekend in Darlington, Bootie was trying to come up with a new codeword for a strategy.
However, with the race weekend being on Mother’s Day, the veteran crew chief improvised in making the strategy call, which made for a hilarious radio conversation.

The driver of the No. 23 had a pretty rough couple of weeks with back-to-back DNF finishes at Talladega and Dover. Kansas had a decent result with a P17 finish, but he really got back to his previous best with a 7th-place finish at Darlington Raceway. Wallace deserves all the plaudits for his on-track performance, but it was Bootie Barker who refined supreme with his hilarious radio comments during the race.
With just 60 laps to go in the race, Bootie took to the radio and said, “This will be about a 60-lap run. We will most likely do, hold on one second. What’s Bubba’s Momma’s name, Freddie? Desi, he replied. “We’ll probably play Desi, Desi.” Wallace acknowledged his crew chief’s call and responded, “Yeah 10-4, You had to look up her name huh?
“Well, I was going to say, Mrs Wallace,” says Bootie. In trying to get back his chief, the 23XI star added, “Reach behind, Amanda, what’s his mom’s name? Freddie chimed in, stating that he was close to guessing his crew chief’s mom’s name. “You close might be a channel 2 conversation.” The entire conversation was shared by NASCAR via their Instagram handle.

Qualified inside the top 10, finishing the Darlington race on P7. This was indeed a good weekend for the No. 23 team, especially after their recent purple patch. Wallace, before the Darlington race, had expressed his optimism for a good finish on the back of his good track record, and he rightly delivered the goods. A 17th-place finish in Kansas was a bit of a surprise, but they look to have turned the corner with last weekend’s results.

Last season in the spring race, the 30-year-old managed a top-five finish in all three races at Kansas, Darlington, and Charlotte. So with the next race again at one of his favorite tracks, we should expect yet another top-placing finish from the #23 team. However, there is concern for them as they find themselves in the same position as last year. Hovering on the bubble to make it into the final 16 for the playoffs.
Tyler Reddick has already secured his playoff spot with a win and was in contention for another at Darlington. Hopefully Wallace also follows suit and snag his first of the season soon.
