This is it. After the next weekend, Jimmie Johnson will bid farewell to his NASCAR career. In light of this, his long-time crew chief, Chad Knaus spoke about the seven-time Cup series champion. The two first met at Homestead Miami Speedway and a friend joked that he needed to be Johnson’s crew chief.
He said, “After Mr. Hendrick and Brian Whitesell called me and asked me if I was interested in being crew chief for Jimmie. We sat down and had lunch, and I realized he was way more than just your average race car driver. Had a charisma about him that was just needing to get out.”
Knaus noted that that charisma was not unleashed. This was largely because Jimmie Johnson did not have many opportunities. The former crew chief revealed that the 45-year-old acted as a confidant. He had an uncanny ability to do what was needed to win races and championships.

Knaus admitted that he would often get on Johnson’s case if he didn’t deliver the result. On the other end of the spectrum, Jimmie Johnson would give back in kind, if the car was not up to his standards. This is the same man who will run a marathon after a race.
Additionally, Johnson set up a foundation for underprivileged children. He showcased his human side, under no pressure from outside sources. It just goes to show what kind of person Johnson is and his character and why he is so well-liked.

When the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series ends, Jimmie Johnson will begin his new chapter in the IndyCar Series. He will join the Chip Ganassi Racing team and partner Scott Dixon in 13 races in 2021.
Meanwhile, Alex Bowman is set to succeed him in the #48 Hendrick Motorsports car. Truthfully speaking, it will be strange to see someone else in the 48 car, as he practically made it his own number.
