Grimace is a fictional character created by McDonald’s in 1971. As a purple, rotund creature with a large head and wide mouth, Grimace is one who is depicted as a happy and friendly face—and has a sweet tooth for milkshakes.

McDonald’s released the Grimace Shake on June 12, 2023, in honor of the character’s 52nd birthday. The shake was available for a limited time as part of the Grimace Birthday Meal. In this light, a TikTok trend went viral that has amassed mixed reactions from fans. McDonald’s has not commented on the trend. But recently their official Twitter post created a buzz.

The Grimace Shake trend started in June 2023. TikTokers film themselves ordering a Grimace Shake from McDonald’s, drinking it, and then appearing to either be dead, passed out, or vomiting purple milk all over the streets as if they’ve been poisoned. The trend was first started by TikToker Fraz on June 14.

McDonald’s said goodbye to Grimace on July 6, 2023, after a month-long campaign celebrating his birthday. The campaign was a success, with McDonald’s social media accounts seeing a significant increase in engagement. However, the campaign also took an unexpected turn when fans on TikTok transformed the limited-edition purple milkshake into a viral horror meme.
