Who is Gio Ruggiero?

Gio Ruggiero is a 20-year-old NASCAR Truck Series debutant who has sparked quite some anticipation among fans. Ruggiero hails from Seekonk, Massachusetts, and was born on October 6, 2004. Right from his childhood days, Ruggiero felt like he had an affinity for the world of racing. It was a local race in his hometown that finally ignited his passion and made him want to try out the sport. Since then, there has been no looking back. 

After Ruggiero made a stellar impact at ARCA, he was signed in by Tricon Garage. Gio Ruggiero is a young lad who expressed that every time he is not on the tracks, he is enjoying a good workout or enjoying a bowl of his favorite meal, ground beef and rice. He also shares aspirations to compete at the Cup Series races soon. 

Gio Ruggiero racing career: Childhood to NASCAR Truck Series

While Gio Ruggiero’s age might be shocking, his accomplishments are worth mentioning. His racing career began in the Super Late Model circuits, where he quickly made a name for himself. However, the breakthrough year came in 2023, when he became the only driver in history to win the CRA Super Series Championship and the Southern Super Series Championship in the same season. However, this was his lucky year. Gio Ruggiero ended up claiming a prestigious win at the Winchester 400. This ended up further solidifying his reputation as a dominant force in the Late Model world.

In 2024, Gio Ruggiero’s records were extended after he competed in the ARCA Menards Series East. He made his debut at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway and participated in over a dozen ARCA events for Venturini Motorsports. It is his consistent performance and dedication that have earned him a full-time contract with TRICON Garage for the 2025 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. The team partner, David Gilliland, spoke of the hopes they have in Ruggiero and said, “Gio has shown a lot of promise in his young career, and we are super excited to welcome him into our program. Jumping into the Truck Series is no small feat, but Gio has proven that he adapts quickly, and we have no doubt that he will have a successful rookie season with us as he takes over the 17 truck”.

Gio Ruggiero’s ARCA performance has been great, and yet this is a genre that is completely different from the world of NASCAR racing. However, transitioning into the world of Truck Series, a full-time driver opens his avenue into the world of NASCAR. Representing TRICON Garage as part of the Toyota Racing Development program, this move provides Ruggiero with a platform to compete at the national level. If Ruggiero can prove his expertise as a driver in this tier of racing, then opportunities will open up for him in the next tier of races, like the Xfinity Series.

Ruggiero’s history of quick adaptation, as seen in his ARCA and Late Model success, positions him well for a strong rookie season. His partnership with experienced crew chief Shannon Rursch and the supportive environment at TRICON Garage ensure that he has the resources to excel. Speaking of the amazing opportunity he got at such an early stage of his career, Ruggiero said, “I am super thankful to have the opportunity to run full-time with TRICON in 2025. I look forward to getting to work with all of the guys on the 17 team and contending for wins this season.”

Such has been the news from the team at the moment; it seems like Tricon Garage is all set to welcome the 2025 season with strong Truck Series drivers. Along with Gio Ruggiero, Tony Briedinger has also made an entry into the team. Along with that, there is a powerhouse of drivers who are extremely strong on the tracks and have proven their expertise multiple times on the track. Leading the charter is none other than Corey Heim with a stellar 2023 season. He has bagged three wins, 12 top-fives, and a regular-season championship. Balancing Truck Series duties with Xfinity and Cup Series roles, Heim is a championship contender.

Next in line, the team has Tanner Gray. Gray is a former NHRA Pro Stock World Champion and has steadily progressed in NASCAR. He has been able to tally ten top-fives and 22 top-tens. This season, he will be marking his return with Crew Chief Jerame Donley and will aim for his first Truck Series win. He has also had a promising rookie season with six top-tens, and is currently under the guidance of Jeff Hensley, hoping to mark his first victory for the season.

And finally, rising star William Sawalich brings youthful energy, with ARCA East and National wins, and aims to build on his historic top-10 Truck finish. With the updated roster of seasoned champions and rising stars like Gio Ruggiero, TRICON Garage is all set to make waves in the 2025 NASCAR Truck Series.
