Denny Hamlin admits to not being at par with Hendrick Motorsports’ prodigy
During a discussion on the latest episode of his ‘Actions Detrimental’ podcast, Hamlin stated, “One of the things that really didn’t get said enough is that William Byron’s team. That’s why they’re upfront so much. They hold serve like 90-something percent of the time. But they come in first or second, they’re coming out there. If they are fifth or sixth, they’re coming out on the front row…”
He continued, “Track position is so important in our game, that they were just riding the coattails a lot of times of that pit crew and that just keeps putting them up front, more and more and more.”
“Where on the flip side of it, I have the opposite problem where a pit stop or yellow flag comes out and I just hold my head. I’m like, f**k how many are we gonna lose. Like, it just it’s just part of it,” Hamlin concluded.

During a subsequent conversation, Hamlin emphasized that only a few teams had exceptional pit crew members. He also highlighted the crucial role they play in avoiding mistakes for drivers competing at the front, ensuring minimal time lost on pit roads.
Hamlin elaborated, “I think that there are probably five or six really really reliable pit crew guys. Pit crew teams, where you know that they are upfront, they are probably not gonna make a mistake. They’re gonna hold serve most of the time.”
He also recounted an instance where he was on the verge of winning a stage, but after a pit stop, he found himself finishing in 8th place. This experience underscored the significance of having a flawless pit crew when vying for a win from the front.
