The regular season finale ended with a contrasting situation for the racers and the teams. There were celebrations on one side, remorse and disappointment on the other. The Darlington victory and their entry into the playoffs delighted the Chase Briscoe camp. Despite being at their absolute best of the season in the last two races, racers like Kyle Busch couldn’t pull it off this time around. However, the situation was much more upsetting for others. For racers like Bubba Wallace, it may have felt like a missed opportunity.
The 30-year-old had a promising start to the race, coming second only to Kyle Larson for a major part of the first stage. The start at Darlington gave some hope to Bubba Wallace fans and the 23XI Racing team, who were trying hard to make both their cars qualify for the playoffs this season. But the No. 23 gradually lost its ground to the extent that he couldn’t remain in the playoff mix. Now, he’s left with nothing but a list of reasons and maybe a few excuses.
Bubba Wallace failed to grab the opportunity

Bubba Wallace was right in the thick of playoff contention before the Darlington Raceway showdown, battling alongside drivers like Martin Truex Jr., Ty Gibbs, Ross Chastain, and Chris Buescher. A golden opportunity arose when Truex’s car spun out early, colliding with Ryan Blaney and suffering significant damage. While Ty Gibbs and Chase Briscoe seized the chance to score valuable points, Wallace couldn’t capitalize on the chaos. After the race, frustrated Wallace admitted that the No. 23 team just wasn’t good enough, particularly in the final two-thirds of the race. He had hoped the 11 and 5 cars would stay in front, aware of the speed from the 14 and 4 teams, and ultimately acknowledged that the 14 was more deserving of the win that day.

Despite the disappointment, Wallace tried to find some positivity in the situation. He shared, “It’s sports. You go up and down round and round and get the toss of the ringer so. Got to put this weekend behind and put the disappointment behind of not making it to the playoffs and give your all for the next step. I am just off. I am frustrated, I am disappointed, but at the end of the day, I am here. There’s 40 of us to do this. I am blessed at the same time, middle of the race, in the caution I am like damn I am gonna be a dad here soon. So, I am going through it all. It’s fun, we’re good. Our best wasn’t good enough, simple as that.”
Martin Truex Jr. found his way into the playoffs, thanks in part to Bubba Wallace’s slip-up at Darlington Raceway. Truex, sitting 58 points clear of the playoff cut, capitalized on that cushion when it mattered most. As the Joe Gibbs Racing veteran enters the playoffs, it’s a bittersweet milestone—his final run as a full-time racer. Meanwhile, with Wallace’s season ending in disappointment, Tyler Reddick will be the lone 23XI Racing driver carrying the team’s hopes into the playoffs this year.

The 2024 season ended on an unfortunate note for Kyle Busch and Bubba Wallace. But experienced campaigners filing to make it to the playoffs is not something out of the ordinary in the Cup Series. During the 2023 season, Chase Elliott managed to accumulate a total of 805 points in the regular season. The Hendrick Motorsports ace racer had several strong finishes to his name.
But his efforts proved too short for him to secure a victory. The best run he had in a race during the previous season was a second-place finish at the Auto Club Speedway. To add to Elliott’s bad luck, a multiple-car wreck during the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway caused considerable damage to his car, forcing him to retire soon.
Not only this, another veteran of the sport, Martin Truex Jr., failed to make it to the playoffs in 2022. The No. 19 failed to secure any wins for the first time since the 2014 season. Truex, however, tried to the best of his ability, even dominating at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway for 172 laps. But just like Bubba Wallace this year, his best wasn’t enough for him to secure a playoff spot.
