FOX Sports NASCAR coverage journey dates back over two decades. Amassing thirteen Emmy Awards over the years for their NASCAR coverage, Fox covered the prestigious Daytona 500 for their maiden telecast in 2001. Under the currently extended agreement with NASCAR, Fox holds the coverage rights to the first 16 races of the NASCAR Cup Series. Starting with the Daytona 500, their coverage ends with the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway.
Following the end of the Sonoma Raceway Cup Series Event, twitterati called out Fox Sports for its erratic race coverage.
A fitting end to the Fox 2023 season: Mike Joy’s Sonoma slip-up about Martin Truex Jr draws massive backlash

Martin Truex Jr clinched the Toyota/Save Mart 350 title on Sunday at the Sonoma Raceway. Previously winning the Sonoma Raceway title in 2013, 2018, and 2019, the Joe Gibbs Racing #19 driver drove down to Sonoma’s victory lane for the fourth time. As Truex Jr held on to the lead in the final laps, Fox’s play-by-play announcer Mike Joy committed an embarrassing gaffe.
Speaking about the 2016 Toyota/Save Mart 350, Mike announced that Tony Stewart beat Truex Jr to secure the win. This was not true as Denny Hamlin was overtaken by Stewart at Turn 11 on the race’s final lap, whereas Truex Jr finished in the fifth position. In fact, this was the closest Hamlin has ever come to the checkered in Sonoma. This apparent mistake drew heavy criticism from Yahoo Sports’ Nick Bromberg. Taking to Twitter, Nick expressed his disappointment in Fox Sports’ botched coverage of the Sonoma Raceway event.
“Fox’s 2023 coverage is going out in style”
“Fitting end to the Fox 2023 season with Mike Joy saying that Truex is the oldest road course winner since Tony Stewart in 2016 when Stewart beat Truex in Sonoma despite Stewart famously moving Denny Hamlin out of the way in that race for the win. Truex finished fifth in 2016” Bromberg wrote.

While Sunday’s race was jam-packed with action, the sudden cut-away and ads-filled Fox telecast vexed fans. Irate fans joined Nick Bromberg, venting out their emotions regarding the distasteful telecast. Frowning at Fox’s don’t-care attitude, Twitter users blew up the comment section on Nick’s posts.
Some fans commented “I love how they start to show a battle brewing between cars, and just as it’s getting good they switch to showing the leader, running 3 seconds up. never fails. sh*t directing.” Here are some more comments from the fans.
"They're going 3 wide into the tur-" *Camera changes to leaders running single file*

Right!? I was like Truex? You mean Hamlin? And he said it twice during the broadcast. So glad Fox is done for the year. They're absolute trash.
