There is no denying the fact that NASCAR is one of the most competitive motorsports, and it takes a huge amount of physical prowess and mental caliber to thrive in the sport. It takes years of sacrifice and dedication to make a headway into the world of stock car racing, and it is surely not a child’s play.
With the dynamics of the sport changing leaps and bounds, NASCAR’s Cup Series which was once dominated by veteran drivers, is slowly being bombarded by the thirsty and talented younger generations. Owing to this, it seems that 7x Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson is set to pave the way for one such driver.

The 2023 Cup Series has been an utter disappointment for Team Jimmie Johnson. Apart from housing Erik Jones, it also provided the impetus for rookie driver Noah Gragson, a driver who had displayed enough promise in his Xfinity career. However, the rookie driver was embroiled in an on-track incident at Gateway and was sidelined for Sonoma after suffering from concussion-like symptoms. Here is what went down at Gateway.
The final blow, however, was dealt to the team when Gragson was embroiled in a social media controversy that first led him to be suspended for an indefinite period, and then leave his position as the driver for #42.
Asking for the release, Gragson said in a statement, “I love racing, and I am looking forward to a second chance to compete for wins at the highest level of NASCAR — and most importantly, make my family, my team and the fans proud of me once again.”
The series of incidents naturally left Johnson’s Legacy Motor Club in choppy waters without any signs of light at the end of the tunnel.
To keep the hopes alive, in the owner’s playoff, Truck Series driver Carson Hocevar was roped in to pilot the No. 42 car, alongside Erik Jones as a teammate.
The result? It was beyond impressive. The No. 42 car in the three playoff races was able to deliver impeccable results. Hocevar finished in P11 in Bristol, despite a loose wheel. The results seemed to have taken the NASCAR world by surprise. Without many Cup Series experiences, the driver was able to navigate his way among the heavyweights of NASCAR. Due to this, Jimmie Johnson, on his birthday, delivered a surprise announcement for the driver as well as the fans.
Carson Hocevar would continue to pilot the No. 42 car in the playoff races at Texas and Talladega. In a small clip posted on Twitter by Jimmie Johnson’s team, we see the Truck Series announce, “I am racing for Jimmie Johnson and Maury Gallagher and Legacy M.C. at Texas, where I won my first career Truck Series race, so I get a little bit more fun with the No. 42 at Texas and Talladega. I have another shot to try to get them a win and try to run up front.”

Hocevar, in the playoff elimination race at Bristol, was simply spectacular. He was able to tame the notorious track and was able to complete at P11 with a loose wheel on his car.
In his post-race interview, the rookie expressed, “We had a really fast No. 42 Sunseeker Chevy. It was a lot of fun. We were running fifth at one point, and I think that’s where we finished in Stage 2. Our car was so fast. We had a lot of speed. We were just too free there at the end. We wanted to get a top 10, but we were really close.”

Given his performance in his short stint in the Cup Series, Hocevar is surely grabbing the attention of major Cup Series teams. If the stars are aligned, perhaps this young prodigy will soon upgrade to the elite format of the sport. However, it may not be in Jimmie Johnson’s team as the owner has already asked John Hunter Nemechek to fill in the #42 seat next year.
