Can passion and talent alone create a championship-winning NASCAR team? Denny Hamlin and 23XI Racing quickly learned the hard truth—without the right resources, even the boldest visions struggle to survive. When Hamlin and NBA legend Michael Jordan launched 23XI Racing in 2020, they entered the sport with high expectations. They aimed to compete with NASCAR’s top teams and chase titles. But reality hit fast. Financial constraints, technological disadvantages, and NASCAR’s restrictive policies made success harder than they had imagined.
Hamlin knew talent alone wouldn’t be enough. “Racing isn’t just about driving fast—it’s about having the right partners who believe in your vision,” he admitted. While 23XI secured key victories, they constantly fought an uphill battle. Unlike legacy teams with deep pockets and decades of sponsorship backing, Hamlin and Jordan needed investors willing to take a chance on them. And NASCAR’s rigid charter system only made things worse. The league’s exclusivity policies limited their growth, leaving them no choice but to fight back.

Navigating sponsorship gains amid legal struggles
By October 2024, the stakes had never been higher. 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports took a bold stand. Together, they sued NASCAR and its CEO, Jim France, accusing the organization of monopolizing track ownership and enforcing restrictive deals that hurt independent teams. Michael Jordan made his frustration clear. “The way NASCAR is run today is unfair to teams, drivers, sponsors, and fans,” he declared. 23XI wasn’t just racing for wins anymore—they were fighting for survival.
The lawsuit sent shockwaves through the sport. Then, in December 2024, a breakthrough came. U.S. District Court Judge Kenneth D. Bell ruled in 23XI’s favor, granting a preliminary injunction. The ruling ensured the team could continue competing as a chartered entity while the case played out in court. For the first time in months, 23XI had a lifeline. Just as legal battles threatened to derail their future, a game-changing partnership arrived. Mobil 1, a flagship brand of ExxonMobil valued at $485 billion, expanded its sponsorship. More than just money, Mobil 1 brought advanced lubricant technology and confidence.

Denny Hamlin sees 23XI Racing’s legal battle against NASCAR as an unavoidable confrontation—one that could redefine the sport. With teams facing restrictive policies and limited opportunities, NASCAR’s resistance to change left 23XI and others with no choice but to fight back. The lawsuit represents more than just a legal dispute; it’s a battle against an entrenched system that favors exclusivity over fairness. For Tyler Reddick, this deal was about more than just sponsorship. It represented 23XI’s relentless pursuit of performance.
“It’s awesome to have Mobil 1 on board,” Reddick said. “Their technology and constant innovation match what we’re trying to do.” Every fraction of a second mattered, and Mobil 1’s technology could provide the edge they needed. Better engine efficiency, reduced friction, and increased durability could mean the difference between mid-pack finishes and victories. Reddick, eager for the upcoming season, added, “I’m excited to work with them this year. Hopefully, we can get their car to victory lane.”
Bubba Wallace felt the same. Mobil 1’s support gave 23XI Racing much-needed stability after years of financial struggles. “I’m excited to have Mobil 1 on my Toyota this season,” Wallace said. “They’ve been on some of the biggest teams, so carrying that iconic brand in 2024 is really cool.” He also emphasized Mobil 1’s strong relationship with Toyota, seeing it as a crucial factor in maximizing speed and performance. Mobil 1’s arrival did more than stabilize 23XI—it gave them a new identity. The team unveiled “The Pegasus,” a bold new livery for the No. 23 Mobil 1 Toyota Camry.

As the 2025 season approached, all eyes turned to Circuit of The Americas (COTA), a track that could define 23XI’s future. This season wasn’t just about racing—it was about proving they belonged. Now, one question remains: Will Pegasus be the wings that finally elevate 23XI Racing to championship contention? The answer lies on the track. Denny Hamlin and his team aren’t just fighting for wins. They’re battling to reshape NASCAR itself.

Mobil 1: A Timeless Force Driving Innovation in NASCAR
Mobil has been a pillar of the American petroleum industry since its founding in 1867. Over the years, it has built a reputation for innovation and performance, with Mobil 1 becoming one of its most recognizable products. Since 1974, Mobil 1 has been a trusted name in NASCAR, backing some of the sport’s biggest teams and drivers. That legacy grew stronger when Toyota Racing Development (TRD) expanded its partnership with Mobil 1. The deal, signed a year ago, brought Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) and 23XI Racing under its umbrella. As a result, Christopher Bell, Tyler Reddick, Bubba Wallace, and John Hunter Nemechek all ran Mobil 1 paint schemes in select races throughout the Cup Series season. Now, with 23XI Racing’s ongoing battle for legitimacy and performance, Mobil 1’s support carries even greater significance as the team pushes for success in 2025.

“TRD’s technical partnership with Mobil 1 has been integral to Toyota’s on-track performance and success over the past 20-plus years. From winning the Indy 500 to championships in Nascar, IMSA, NHRA and countless achievements in sports car, grass roots and dirt racing action, Mobil 1 has been the common denominator. As we begin another exciting racing season in 2024, we are honored to expand our partnership with Mobil 1,” David Wilson, the president of TRD USA, said in a statement last year.
At a time when sponsorship money is hard to come by, 23XI Racing is doing a good job of retaining its core partners. Especially at a time when their future in NASCAR is uncertain and hinges on the outcome of the anti-trust lawsuit they’ve filed against the sanctioning body.
