After the departure of NASCAR Cup Series team Stewart Haas Racing, it looks like an Xfinity Series outfit could be heading towards a similar trajectory. The team in the discussion here is JD Motorsports, an Xfinity team owned and operated by Johnny Davis, since 1983. Making it one of the oldest teams in the second tier of NASCAR racing.
Unlike SHR, JD Motorsports hasn’t officially announced its plans for a potential exit from NASCAR racing. But going by the activity at the team’s race shop, they are headed in a similar direction of calling it quits.

A report by NASCAR insider Toby Christie stated that JD Motorsports has laid off the majority of its employees after last weekend’s race at Pocono. Currently, the team fields two entries, No. 4 on the full schedule with Dawson Cram and a part-time No. 6 car. The team withdrew their part-time ride from the race at the Tricky Triangle and ran with Cram in the #4.
“According to the sources, JD Motorsports team owner Johnny Davis officially laid off staff members on Monday as they entered the shop. One source has said that Davis claims that he intends to field a car for this weekend’s NASCAR Xfinity Series event at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but the source is unsure how after the moves that were made on Monday morning.” Toby Christie mentioned it in its report.
Moreover, the team has faced financial troubles, as further details state that JD Motorsports filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on April 8. The team is being represented by the Penn Law Firm. A total of 20 creditors have not received their investment in the team. Notable creditors include ECR Engines, G-Force South, and TriMaxx Graphics. However, it appears that most of the laid-off employees have been fully compensated.

The report mentioned that the owner, Johnny Davis, is looking to field their No. 4 entry for next weekend’s race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Meanwhile, Garrett Smithley who ran a majority of races with the #4 team has confirmed he will drive the No. 45 Alpha Prime Racing car at Indy. Now if JD Motorsports does not show up this week it could signal an unfortunate closure of the racing outfit, thus adding them to the list of defunct racing organizations in recent history.
In their prolonged stay in the Xfinity Series, JD Motorsports has been unable to register a winning result for themselves. However, they have contributed immensely to the growth of the sport and catapulted the careers of many talented race car drivers. Ross Chastain is a shining example of that. The melon man learned the tricks of the trade during his time on the team and helped them to their best-ever finish (P4) at Iowa.
