Austin Theriault has been racing in the NASCAR arena since 2012 in the K&K Pro Series. He has not had a single full-time season in either the Cup, Truck, or Xfinity Series. However, the 28-year-old is relatively experienced and has a few wins in the ARCA Series. Ultimately, it seems that he has realized that racing is not his true calling.

As it turns out, he has turned to politics and is representing the Republican Party at Fort Kent. Currently, he is running for election to take over as Maine House Speaker. Admittedly, he would have his work cut out for him because one of his predecessors was John L Martin. The Democrat is regarded as one of the most powerful lawmakers in state history and was elected at 23, all the way back in 1964.

Sadly, he had some injury issues, which brought his NASCAR career to a premature end. Since then, he transitioned into the role of a mentor to other drivers. Theriault confessed that he was initially hesitant to get involved in politics, but relented.

He said, “I’ve always had the drive to be a part of this community as best as I possibly could. This seems like another opportunity to try to help the area. I believe I bring a different outside perspective that somebody that’s been there a long time may not have. In a perfect world, you put two and two together, and you have a very powerful combination.”

Currently, his political campaign has been running smoothly, raising more money than all but one House candidate. His primary opponent is Democratic candidate, Dana Marie Appleby. Theriault’s political designs start as far back as his school days at Fort Kent, where he served as student council president. In addition to that, he was the council representative of the school board.
