Former NASCAR driver Hermie Sadler is currently making waves in the political arena. He is applying for a seat in the Virginia State Senate, representing the Republican party. Recently, he filed a lawsuit against the state of Virginia regarding its recent ban on skill games. For the uninitiated, these skill games are close to slot machines. However, there is little to no luck involved in playing these games.

Truthfully speaking, the state has gone back and forth on this issue in the past few years. Now it seems that we expect the lawsuit to head into trial in early 2023. State senator and attorney Bill Stanley filed the lawsuit on Sadler’s behalf. He revealed that the judge extended a temporary injunction allowing pre-registered skill games to continue operating.

He said“We fully anticipate that this temporary injunction will become a permanent injunction after the trial this spring. (I am) extremely happy for small business owners and their families who can rest easy knowing that they can operate their businesses through the holidays without further interference from the government and out of state casino interests.”

What else did ex-NASCAR driver Hermie Sadler say about the issue?

Sadler confessed that he was glad to see the case heading to trial and an extended injunction. His interest in the matter is also on a personal level, as the former NASCAR driver owns many small businesses. This includes restaurants and convenience stores that offer skill games.

The ban came into effect in 2020, courtesy of legislation passed by the General Assembly. However, former Governor Ralph Northam delayed the ban, owing to other priorities. In other words, he had to help the state raise money, because this was in the thick of the COVID-19 crisis, and a relief fund was prioritized.

Last year, the ban was officially in place in the state of Virginia. However, that lasted until Stanley filed a lawsuit, deeming the move as illegal. He insisted on its violation of small businesses’ constitutional rights to free speech. In response, the court elected to issue a temporary injunction, where registered skill games before the ban were allowed to function.
