From Pit Lane to Twitter War: No Holds Barred
In the Xfinity Series race at COTA, Josh Bilicki, formerly with Joe Gibbs Racing, was battling through the field when he found himself tangling in an incident with Kris Wright, in the number 5 Chevrolet SS of Our Motorsports.
The keen followers of the Xfinity series will know that this is not the first time these two drivers have clashed, or should we say crashed. The seeds of this rivalry were sown back in Daytona, in the season opener, where Wright misjudged the pit entry and crashed in the back of Bilicki. “I just saw the video…someone was coming in hot, hot, hot,” Bilicki said post-race, still shaken by the incident. Despite damaging his car, Bilicki managed to finish the race in 14th place.
Fast forward to COTA, where both drivers were looking to score big after the rocky start to the season. A pit lane speeding penalty set Bilicki back after showing good initial race pace. Wright, meanwhile, was struggling in the traffic when the two drivers clashed again.
“Really fast car, not much to show for it,” Bilicki took to social media, recounting his race, as you do as a racing driver. “We were charging forward until the 5 car spun right in front of us and got into me….again…costing us about 25 seconds.” Did Kris Wright respond to Bilicki’s allegations blaming him for the incident? Well, of course he did, and this response is what lit the fuse to this whole controversy. His response? “Got loose outside of you and you finished me off,”
Bilicki did not hold back after this, “Dude…..it’s embarrassing that you don’t even know what happened.” he replied. “ I was behind you. You were on the inside of the 35 car (he was passing you on the outside) and you stepped on your 🍆 again and spun all on your own, without me touching you. I had nowhere to go and you hit me as you spun around.”

The five-word diss—“stepped on your 🍆 again”—instantly went viral among NASCAR fans, but Bilicki was not done, he went ahead and delivered the real knockout blow after this, “Maybe you should go back to being a gentleman driver in IMSA where you can race doctors and dentists in LMP3.”

“I tried giving you the benefit of the doubt after Daytona,” Bilicki continued referring to the Daytona pit lane accident, “But it’s honestly getting out of hand,” making it clear that Wright’s actions are a recurring problem. And this isn’t the first time Wright has found himself in the center of a racing controversy.

Beyond the Bilicki Feud
This wasn’t an isolated incident, which has developed an image among the fans due to his ‘aggressive’ driving style. Analysing the Daytona pit lane incident, where Wright entered the pit lane too fast and collided with Bilicki, analysts have come to the conclusion that the crash was Wright’s fault, after the initial speculations about brake failure and spotter miscommunication.

These recent incidents at Daytona and COTA have brought his on-track conduct under focus, especially in Martinsville back in 2022, when he caused a multi-car wreck at the back of the field or crashing into the wall on his own at Charlotte Motor Speedway. There’s a growing sentiment that his driving style, while aggressive, can sometimes dip into being reckless. Whether it is due to lack of experience or pushing the limits just too far, or is this just a string of unfortunate coincidences, the question is, what will happen when both drivers compete next week at Phoenix Raceway? Will cooler heads prevail or will the rivalry heat up more to become the 2025 season’s highlight?
