Home/NASCAR

The 2023 NASCAR Cup season has been a big one in terms of nostalgia. This is because a few fan-favorite drivers from the past have been returning to race. Chief among them are Hendrick Motorsports legend Jimmie Johnson, and more recently, Ryan Newman, for Legacy Motor Club and Rick Ware Racing, respectively. Of course, they are not coming back on a full-time basis, but making occasional appearances at select races, which, seeing their status, is good enough for most.

Johnson has competed at the Daytona 500 and the Circuit of The Americas. However, he has not exactly set the stage alight with his comeback to the fray. Meanwhile, Newman was roped in after Cody Ware ran into some legal trouble earlier this year. In his first race, at the Darlington Raceway, he finished in 28th place.

But now, it seems another Hendrick Motorsports star, who retired from the sport in 2018, is thinking of taking the same route.

Who is this Hendrick Motorsports star?

In light of all this, ex-NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne made an astounding revelation. He confessed that he entertained thoughts of returning to the Cup Series arena. This was a far cry from the time when he suffered with maintaining his body temperature and his heart rate in 2018. It actually reached a point that after Darlington that year, he vomited after the race. He was also sick even after leaving the infield care center.

Kahne told Autoweek, “I think it would be great to run a stock car again.”

He was struggling pretty badly in 2018, and Darlington was as bad as he had ever felt. He added, “I have done a lot since then and I think my body is in a much better place. It needed a rest. I needed to understand the things that I’ve gone through. It was a long process. I feel the way I should feel and that’s nice.”

“The Cup races were tough. They’re long, grueling, depending on the time of the year they’re tough on you. Dehydration to me is no joke and I was battling it pretty bad.”

When Kahne joined Hendrick Motorsports in 2012, he picked up six career wins in the #5 car. The highest that he ever finished in his career was 4th place in his first season with the organization. After 2017, the #5 number went with him until Kyle Larson’s appointment in 2021.

Since then, Larson has gone one better than Kahne and snatched his first career Cup Series title.
