With over 600 races and 48 wins to his name, Denny Hamlin is more than a veteran in the NASCAR Cup Series. Despite the controversies surrounding him, his passion for the sport has always grown stronger with time. After recently coming up with a unique and tempting idea, he’s now got the attention of a multi-millionaire personality. Luckily for Kyle Busch, had this intriguing concept materialized, it would have left him in an embarrassing scenario.

At times, Hamlin’s outspoken nature and unfiltered approach divide opinions. Nevertheless, there’s one incredible ability of his that goes undermined. It’s his love for racing and wishing the best for the sport. Repeatedly, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver has come up with new and creative ideas to help NASCAR. The introduction of Next Gen cars looked like a game-changer last year. While it had a positive impact, things haven’t looked the same in 2023. NASCAR has seen a sharp drop in its viewership numbers. To put things into perspective, this year’s Daytona 500 recorded 8.17 million viewers, which is an eight percent decrease from 2022.

Unfortunately, the numbers have only declined as the season has progressed. In fact, after the race at Auto Club Speedway, there has been a decrease in double-digits in every race. While it is alarming for the sport, Denny Hamlin has come up with a creative solution to help NASCAR out.

Despite his love-and-hate relationship with the governing body, the 42-year-old has proposed the introduction of a five-week mid-summer tournament, with the winner getting the $3 million prize While the competition involves the top 32 drivers, it has an interesting layout that could see some interesting head-to-head clashes.

In fact, the idea is so tempting that it has got quite a few people intrigued. Speaking on his podcast “Actions Detrimental”, Hamlin discussed about the response he got. He said, “So last week we came up with an idea, a summer bracket and that kind of took off on social media and it got a lot of attention for sure. When the first text I got was from Marcus Smith, he’s like ‘Hi, let’s talk, this is intriguing to me.'”

For those unaware, Marcus G. Smith is the CEO and co-owner of Speedway Motorsports Inc (SMI). Interestingly, SMI also owns the Charlotte Motor Speedway. While the sport needs to change things around, giants like Hamlin and Smith could definitely play a vital role in that.

As of now, NASCAR’s stance on such a proposal remains unknown. Certainly, it is a unique idea to consider, more so because it has the potential to create a lot of upsets. Wouldn’t it be fun to see an underdog knock out a strong title challenger?
