Quite some buzz went around the alleys of NASCAR when the organization announced that there would be no more dirt racing at Bristol Motor Speedway. And now another rumor regarding the upcoming regular season races has made the fandom go gaga.

Besides being extremely excited about who their new champion is going to be, the NASCAR fans wait eagerly for something more while the postseason is in full fervor. And that is the upcoming season’s race schedule. However, when a NASCAR insider tweeted a sneak peek into the nature of NASCAR races in 2024, fans began heavily criticizing it.

Although nothing is certain as of now, even the possibility of what they heard had them wheeling their heads in utter disgust.

NASCAR fans bashed NASCAR in the comments section

Couch Racer, Freddie Kraft’s venture, posted on Reddit that there were rumors that NASCAR would have multiple road courses and ‘plate’ tracks in the 2023 NASCAR schedule. This has the fans frown.

Naturally, restrictor plates take the thrill out of the game. NASCAR is an entertainment business where the officials often ignore cautions to give the audience as many green laps as they can. And when that same community announces something like this, there are bound to be repercussions.

40 cars running at controlled speed; there are no contacts, no on-track squabbles, no verbal altercation, nothing whatsoever. Isn’t that a bit too boring? The fans on Reddit surely felt so.

Someone said, “So now we get TWO lottery races in the playoffs, and 20% of the championship will be decided by them.

“F*cking gross.”

While another exclaimed, “I just threw up a little.

“Ope, still going.”

“Oh god, I can’t stop.””

Someone joked about Texas Motor Speedway being replaced from next year’s schedule and wrote, “I am assuming Atlanta is in the playoffs replacing Texas.”

Another fan commented, “All these conflicting rumors moshed together is making me believe something went horribly wrong with more than one 2024 venue and NASCAR’s in full scramble-mode.”

Someone got so impatient that they wrote, “Jesus Christ NASCAR just release the schedule so we can stop speculating.”

While another took the chance to hint that rumors are rumors for a reason and that NASCAR’s upcoming season might be just a photocopy of the current one. “I’m betting it all culminates in a schedule with almost nothing changed from this year. 😂,” they said.

NASCAR might or might not have multiple ‘plate’ tracks in the 2024 playoffs. But if they do, it is understandable why they’re doing so. It is simply to make the Superspeedways safer for the drivers to drive on. But that has a slight twist to it.

Restricted racing is a double-edged sword

The deal here is simple. As the term suggests, restrictor plates are metallic devices that are installed at the intake point of an engine in order to control power. Now why would NASCAR use restrictor plates for its races when speed is the biggest thrill of the sport?

In Superspeedways like Talladega and Daytona, cars might throttle beyond 200 mph, which is an insanely blazing speed. Indeed, NASCAR has since its inception improved its safety measures and protocols, but danger never goes away. The worst part is, it comes unannounced.

Hence, NASCAR uses restrictor plates to reduce the horsepower and speed by bringing down the amount of fuel and air that goes inside the piston chamber by obstructing just a little of the engine intake and the carburetor. The idea is to reduce the speed in order to reduce the chances of contact and even if there are contacts; the effects are less severe. However, restricted racing comes with its own drawbacks.

The biggest one is that it induces pack racing. When the speed of the cars comes down, cars will automatically cluster together and use more drafting. That might make it difficult for the drivers to figure out ways to overtake their opponents. However, NASCAR perhaps feels like the benefits of restrictor plates at ‘plate’ tracks far outweigh the risks of pack racing.
