Is Corey LaJoie a liability for Spire Motorsports, or just misunderstood by fans?

Lately, Corey LaJoie has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. The Spire Motorsports driver recently lost his Cup Series seat after a string of poor performances this season. If that wasn’t enough, the 32-year-old crashed at Michigan and Daytona International Speedway, bringing about more scrutiny of his performances. To say that LaJoie has been struggling would be an understatement, as the North Carolina native hasn’t finished in the top ten since the opening race of the season.

With Spire Motorsports recently uploading multiple social media posts featuring their car smashing a variety of objects under its tire, fans didn’t waste the opportunity to take shots at Corey LaJoie and his Cup Series season so far.

In the last two races, Corey LaJoie has had not one, but two major crashes on the racetrack. The first incident occurred at FireKeepers Casino 400 when LaJoie’s No. 7 Chevy made contact with the rear of Noah Gragson’s No. 10 Ford Mustang, forcing him to slide sideways before he went airborne and flipped upside down. The two drivers were at it again at Daytona International Speedway, when LaJoie shoved the left rear of Gragson’s car during Lap 61 of the race. What followed was complete chaos, as the ‘push’ led to a domino effect, with a total of 17 cars being involved in the incident.

Fans were left furious at Corey LaJoie after the incident, as his actions resulted in race favorites, Denny Hamlin and Chase Elliott being forced to retire early. With a lot riding on the season’s penultimate race, the last thing fans wanted to see were key drivers competing for the regular season championship or the playoffs being forced into a DNF. LaJoie, who is competing for neither, effectively decided the outcome for several drivers at the Coke Zero Sugar 400, much to the frustration of drivers and teams.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Corey LaJoie a liability for Spire Motorsports, or just misunderstood by fans?

Have an interesting take?

Call it a coincidence, or just odd timing, but Spire Motorsports and NASCAR released two videos on Instagram, showing one of their cars crushing a variety of objects under their tire. The objects ranged from a miniature guitar, bowling pins, fruits, a cactus, and a glass of wine with grapes, along with a few other things. As expected, fans didn’t miss the opportunity to make fun of the video, drawing parallels with the Spire car crushing objects and Corey LaJoie’s actions in the Cup Series, particularly after the incident at Daytona International Speedway.

As soon as Spire Motorsports and NASCAR uploaded the Instagram videos, comments began pouring in from NASCAR fans. With frustration toward Corey LaJoie having reached an all-time high, it wasn’t surprising to see fans take the opportunity to make fun of the No. 7 Chevy driver. Remembering LaJoie’s two DNFs in the season so far, one fan wrote, “Live representation of Lajoie destroying every car in the field including his, week in and week out.” Echoing that sentiment, another fan cynically said, “I just know this is LaJoie’s car,” even though the car number was not visible in the video that was shared.

One fan questioned the objective of the video, as it showed nothing but a tire-crushing object under its weight. Replying to Spire Motorsports and NASCAR, the fan went on to say, “Why? Who wasted their time making this?” Another fan expressed a similar point of view while remembering LaJoie’s recklessness resulted in 17 cars being involved in a crash at Daytona International Speedway. The fan said, “Hasn’t the 7 car destroyed enough stuff this year?

The second video uploaded by Spire Motorsports and NASCAR featured the car falling on top of a bowl, which didn’t shatter despite the weight of the vehicle over it. Both the racing team and the sanctioning body used clever puns such as “indestructibowl” and “unbowlievable” to describe the situation, which prompted one frustrated fan to reply, “Put it on Corey LaJoie’s nose.”
