At just 21 years old, Corey Heim is exceptionally mature. Both on and off the track, he is not only a formidable presence but also exudes a remarkably refined demeanor. On Friday’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Charlotte, he came a hairbreadth away from taking the win. And to add insult to the night, he didn’t even get to finish second. Yes, he was disqualified!

Corey Heim finished in last place at 36th, but that’s not to say that the race was a dud. Because the way he raced left fans and even veterans of the sport awestruck! Heim qualified second on Friday and started alongside his TRICON teammate Tanner Gray.

The duo battled it out for the top spot, and it didn’t take long before he took the spot. Winning stages 1 and 2, and looking unstoppable with that fast truck, seemed ready to drive off into the North Carolina sunset. Except, there was a speed breaker right in front of him, and unfortunately, that was his luck!

Did Corey Heim miss the “luck” factor?

Luck seemed to have abandoned Corey Heim when he needed it most. After an awesome start and an amazing run, he just spiraled downward. Upon the caution on lap 81, Heim fell to the back of the pack as the entire field entered the pit road. Because of a malfunctioning jack, he was left powerless as his rivals surged ahead, rendering the fastest truck in town immobile. With just 47 laps to go and him in the top 20, you’d think he would just give up.

But that’s not Corey Heim, and for him, the race isn’t over till he decides so. And then we got to witness a chase for the win that left everyone awestruck. He weaved through traffic like it was on rails, flowing in and out until he was inside the top 5 with 15 laps to go.

However, in a surprising turn of events, after the caution, Heim’s crew chief chose to give him four new tires. And then at the pit stop, there were problems with the air gun. So by the time Heim went back on track, he was in 11th! And then the Achilles heel was that the crew missed attaching the lug nut. They thought they missed one, but they missed three! Heim ended up with a penalty and then got disqualified, removing all the points and stage wins he had earned.

Anyone would be angered by the way the night unfolded, but not Heim. He was calm in an outstanding Heim fashion and said, “Obviously, it was an eventful day for us. Feel like it got away from us on a few separate occasions. As soon as you’re not in control of the race, you fall victim to the leader and the air. Nick did a great job blocking my air. I feel like we had the best truck by a long shot. It’s just that when you’re behind the leader, you can’t do much.”

Just like him, another user said, “Heim is going places! The next great talent.” With Heim showing so much maturity on and off the track, it won’t be surprising if we see him shine bright next time in the Cup race, or if not, then at least in the Xfinity series.

Some fans just didn’t hold back from taking a dig at NASCAR. One fan said, @nascar Nice to actually watch some passing, sad that the cup cars put on a worse show than the triple aaa series…Fans are tired of the lack of passes, and the edge-of-seat race, and Corey Heim gave them all that they were lacking.

Another user just couldn’t believe that NASCAR would disqualify the driver just for loose lug nuts, and that too after the race. He said, “Just to be DQ for 3 loose lug nuts.” Well, it might be tough to believe these rules were put up due to safety reasons, and even NASCAR sometimes cannot relax rules.
